REVIEW: B - the bit about the T-shirts was good, but they could have
        spent more time showing the T-shirts in different venues and
        throwing in some reactions (rather than just a montage of
        Bart "modeling" the shirts).  Other than that, it seemed like
        yet another cookie-cutter episode.

Partly, I guess. But also there's been a proliferation of imagery showing Calvin peeing on stuff. You see stickers on cars all the time depicting him peeing on...a team, a state, a different make of car.

This is a kid's song - it pre-dates "Hey Arnold" by decades. "Jebus" was a previous episode ref.

Yeah we used to sing it at summer camp, except it was Miss Suzy instead of Miss Lucy. Maybe it's a regional thing.

Also, Wendy sang a much dirtier version on South Park ("con-taminated water can really get you sick...") although I'm pretty sure they wrote all new lyrics for that one.

I guess S&P has loosened up some if they finally let the Simpsons version on the air 13 years later.

It wasn't S&P that nixed it. According to Mike Reiss, they wanted to do it, but just never could get the timing of the reaction shots to work. Which they still really didn't.

Commentary track on "When Flanders Failed":

Al Jean: This is a rhyme that my sisters, among many, I'm sure, did, when they were kids, this Miss Lucy - oh, wait, did we cut that from this show?

Mike Reiss: It's cut, we could never make it work.

MR: And Homer's listening to this, and he's shocked every time he really thinks they're gonna swear, and we couldn't make it work. It wouldn't work when he was shocked in advance, it didn't work if he was shocked later.

Jon Vitti: I think it also got hurt, it was a victim of animation, the girls playing patti-cakes just looked crazy with all the acceleration problems we had in the Korean animation.

I noticed it when it aired on Sunday, but didn't think to mention it in my upbeat review - I think it would have worked better in a wide shot, with the focus on either Homer or Lisa and Janey, so the rhyme could proceed with its normal rhythm while we watch Homer react (mainly visually). They say comedy often plays better in group shots, so reactions can be seen, and this seems like a textbook example.
