That was the dumb-diddly-doodly-est episode ever made. I'd have rather seen "Moe gets a cellphone". The only bright spot was when they asked for Lou's last name, and he replies he has none, like he's Cher.
Maybe this is a jump-the-shark moment.

No it was not THAT bad. Of course, some shows are not as good as others. I found it funny. Especially Homer getting Burns to fill in for him when he leaves work. Or his hints on how to keep a wife happy (getting a mini beret for your wang). Stuff like that.

Worst episode of the season? Yes, except maybe for the clip show. And it's especially bad considering it's the season finale and it followed the best episode of the season (I'm talking about last week's episode, not the rerun of the episode with the Vegas women shown immediately before it).
No, I've seen much worse episodes. This one was a solid B-.
The wacky ending was the only way they could've ended it.
Cripes, you're several seasons late with that. It jumped the shark a while ago but that doesn't mean it's not worth watching in comparison to other crap that's on tv.

When the lady died I was thinking "Oh no is this another Who Shot Mr. Burns?" and it seemed like it might indeed be a cliffhanger...right up until the horrible horrible end.

I for one am sick of the writers "painting" themselves into a corner and resorting to strange/whacky endings. All to often they resort to this sort of mechanism where they seem to have an interesting idea for a main plot, they take time and start to develop it then they realize that there isn't enough time in a half hour show to come up with a "good" ending -- or they realize the main plot device is so contrived that there is no such thing as a good ending. What to do? "Oh, let's just throw something together -- after all, it's a cartoon so we can do any outrageous unrealistic thing we want and we don't need to worry about continuity."
Best example: "Let's have a judge decree that no one will ever mention that Principal Skinner really isn't Principal Skinner." Of course, in an episode like that their choice for a main plot device was so weak the ending couldn't be anything but poor.
