Simpson's loosely based on Green Acres?

TV Land just recently started showing the campy 60s comedy "Green Acres" again. In one of their promos, they say that Matt Groening is a huge fan of the show, and that by intent, the Simpsons has the same kind of loony insanity buried under the surface.

But that doesn't make it based on "Green Acres".

If it was based on the program, we'd see a fish out of water. A character or characters who are not the equivalent of those surrounding them. "Green Acres" (and plenty of other shows, such as "Newhart") has a sophisticated city slicker landing in the country surrounded by "rural bumpkins". "The Beverly Hillbillies" did the referse, putting the "country bumpkins" into the city, where they suddenly look foolish.

Your text does not match your subject header. Surely what Matt is referring to is not the context, but some of the characters. Some of the good people of Springfield are analogs to many of the peripheral characters in "Green Acres". I can't remember the latter well enough to make direct comparisons, but surely Chief Wiggums is similar in character to Mr. Hainey, someone who isn't particularly intelligent, and who ends up being funny because we are their betters. "Intelligent" wouldn't quite be the word, since often there is intelligence but lack of knowledge. They can also offer up profound statements from time to time.

Not "based on", but Groening has often said that the idea of having Springfield be a town full of off-beat characters was inspired in part by "Green Acres".

I realized after I posted earlier that perhaps Lisa takes the role of Oliver Douglas, and then there is more weight to the concept of The Simpsons being based on Green Acres. She's the intelligent one, she's the straight one, and she's often frustrated by the people around her. Meanhwile, those around her obviously are those off-beat characters that surrouned Oliver Douglas.

But while that is true, Lisa isn't the main character of the show, and so it doesn't really come across as very similar to Green Acres.

Dude, "inspired by" and "based on" mean different things. Please go look it up. Groening can be inspired by "Green Acres" without basing any of his "Simpsons" characters on the "Green Acres" characters. If you can't understand that, then you really shouldn't be participating in this thread.
