Chalmers used to have a Honda, and I doubt he could afford a new car on a superintendent's salary ...maybe a supersuperintendent...

I was worried that this one would fall victim to its incredibly disjointed storyline, but somehow, it made it work. Its fast-paced, gag-based plot delivered a lot of laughs and no dull moments, which allowed me to overlook the fact that it was really not much more than a bunch of stuff that happened. Characterization was great, and though the progression was only barely logical, it flowed smoothly. Bart's "midlife" crisis was handled deftly, Lisa and Homer's bonding worked well, and every plot point really just fell into place. A few flaws keep this one from perfection (Goose Gladwell got a bit annoying by the end and a few jokes misfired), but it still gets an admirable 9/10. (B+/A-)

Homer's line about Korean animation and the animation glitch that followed refer to the fact that the show is animated in Korea. Also, since Homer's muzzle has to do a lot more moving than the rest of his body, it's animated on a different layer than the rest, so that underneath, that's how muzzle-less Homer looks.

Fat Man and Little Boy were the first US atomic bombs to be deployed in combat during World War II. Developed as part of the Manhattan Project, Little Boy was an explosion-type uranium bomb with a force equal to 13,000 tons of TNT, 10 feet long and approx. 9000 lbs.; Fat Man (aptly named after the British Prime Minister of the time, Winston Churchill, who boasted an ample figure, quite worthy of the label 'fat') was an implosion-type plutonium bomb with a force equal to 20 kilotons of TNT, 12 feet long and weighing in at 10000 lbs. Little Boy was used first, on August 6, 1945, dropped 1800 feet over Hiroshima, Japan from a B-29 bomber piloted by U.S. Army Air Force Col. Paul W. Tibbets. Tibbets had named the plane "Enola Gay" (not to be confused with Krusty's "I'm-On-A-Rolla Gay") after his mother the night before the atomic attack. Unlike Fat Man, Little Boy was armed before flight, and was decidedly less complicated in design than its heftier counterpart. Immediate casualties from Little Boy's launch numbered in the range between 70000 to 130000. Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945. Major Charles W. Sweeney piloted the B-29, #77 that dropped Fat Man. After the nuclear mission, #77 was christened Bockscar after its regular Command Pilot, Fred Bock.

Janey and Lisa's skip rope rhyme that made Homer faint was actually a cut joke from Season 3's "When Flanders Failed". Fourteen years later, and we finally see it. Now that's commitment to a gag...

[Note: Lisa's "It could explode" and Homer's "I bet you'll get an 'A'" did not make the episode ...at least not in the same way as the promo.]

Oh, also another meta-ref is the "Mr. Simpson will not say cowabunga" sign, which refers to the producers' insistence that Bart has never actually said cowabunga, and that it only became one of his catchphrases after it was printed on Bart Simpson t-shirts. Which is actually untrue, he has said it multiple times.

Ah that has been around since the SIXTIES if not way before. In fact Jane Curtin did it in Kate & Allie in the mid 80s

Hi: Newbie here, please be patient if I make a mistake.

I noticed other things indicating "nuclear explosion". Bart's tooth falling out..there was an extra scene at the end after credits began..where Bart says something like "Want to know another way to get your teeth to fall out" (or something similar. Goes up to bully and says a few insults which would usually lead to a smash in the mouth...however Bully walks away saying something like "Hmm, that really gives me a lot to think about.

radiation poisoning makes your teeth fall out.

Also Bart and Homer are in a store and Homer is threatening to blow his Nuclear mini up to get the crooked guy to give Bart money, Homer makes reference to a guy outside store window selling Blue Blocker sunglasses which he says "you sometimes see people wearing". Is this a reference to the blinding "flash" that preceeds the actual atomic expolsion??

Nuclear mini is being taken to a dump by Bart and Homer..Homer says something like, "I sure hope some seagull doesn't figure out how to turn this thing on".

Another thing I thought was interesting was at the very beginning, during the basic intro where everyone winds up on the living room couch and then something silly or weird happens to all of them..this time the roof comes off and and they are all swallowed by a "great fish"..may be a reference to the biblical Jonah who God commanded to go to Ninevah and warn them to repent or God would destroy the city. Jonah was swallowed by this great fish and after 3 days he decided he better do it so the fish spit him out and he went to the city to warn them of the impending doom if they didn't shape up.

Just my 2 cents.
