I just realised the other week that when Homer and Mel are in the editing room and they're talking about setting up that the dog is evil by showing his eyes shifting back and forth, that's a reference to a scene in *Modern Romance* (directed, written by, and starring *Simpsons* recurring guest actor Albert Brooks, with a supporting role by *Simpsons* executive producer James L. Brooks).
Albert Brooks and Bruno Kirby are editing a science fiction movie and arguing over a plot hole that could be solved by editing. In the director (James L. Brooks)'s version, the leader is yelling at his soldiers and saying that they don't have the code (password), and one of them says "I know that code" and the leader yells back "You know nothing!" and then later, that soldier *does* have the code, and the leader is surprised--which is a plot hole. In Brooks' suggested edit, we only see the soldier's eyes shifting back and forth, suggesting that he knows something, but isn't saying. The director refuses to go with the more logical edit because he loves that line "You know nothing!"
