I dont understand this one scene

I saw the episode where Homer joins the freakshow and goes on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins. Great episode, one scene I dont get however is the one with the Jamacian hat. Why did the kids not like it? What was the "statement about your connection with regea(sp wrong) music" as Lisa put it. Finally, what the hell is a nark.

Narc is short for narcotics officer. In other words, someone who stops drug users from having fun. The people at the concert call Homer this as an insult.

Bart and Lisa don't think that Homer should wear the hat because he is basically a poseur. He is wearing a Rastafarian hat, but is not part of that group.

Actually, it's someone who prevents drug users from killing themselves, perpetuating crime and endangering society as a whole.

They don't think he should wear it because a middle-aged white guy looks funny in it, and they dont want him to embarass them. There was no social commentary there, as you seem to think.

I was not getting moral with the drug issue. I was just looking at it from the concertgoers' perspective.

I did not add social commentary to my comment about the hat, as you seem to think. The issue had nothing to do with the Rastafarians in particular. The kids did not want their dad to stand out as a poseur, which would embarass them. You tried to add too much deep meaning to my original comment.

Would have been a good idea if it worked and if the government tried to actually inforce it and not just cook up some shit to present themselves as someone that cared about families back when they first came up with it.

Yeah, I looked it up on Dictionary.com to check your facts. It is also a form of British slang. It descends from Romany (which I think are the Gypsies) and means "nose."

The word "narcotic" descends from a Greek word meaning "numbing."

This may be one of those instances in which words from different languages that sound alike create newer words with similar meanings.

Imagine your parents trying to be hip and fit in at Lollapalooza. It'd be pretty embarassing. Thus, Bart and Lisa didn't like the Jamaican hat. Lisa, being the deeper thinker of the two children, was trying to point out that Homer was wearing Rastafarian colors, but didn't have a clue what Rasta is or that it even exists. As usual, Homer didn't get it.

"Narc" is short for "narcotics". A narc is someone who works undercover to bust drug users/sellers. A narc could be a cop, or simply a civilian informant. Drugs don't have to be involved for someone to get labeled a narc, though. More generally, it's used as a hip way of calling someone a tattletail.

Whenever I see this scene I've always got the impression Lisa & Bart don't want Homer to wear the hat in front of the teens because he would so obviously appear a square loser trying to fit in with the hip crowd by doing so. Notice how lame he walks through the audience, giving himself away immediately! It was hilarious. Maybe that one guy who called him "that fat Jamaican guy" bought it, but I think the rest of the kids thought he was undercover cop and doing a very bad job of acting cool.
