How to Introduce Someone to The Simpsons?

My friend just got married and is taking a new wife, raised in India, to live here. He told me that he wants to introduce her to the Simpsons, and asked me to lend him some of my tapes with good episodes. I have a lot, but not all, episodes on tapes. (I have nothing from seasons 1-2.)

So my question is: What episodes can I lend him that would warm someone into the show? What episodes would introduce the characters and style best?

Hmmm, introducing style and characters and not from season 1 or 2. That�s difficult. Season 3 has a lot of good character episodes or maybe season 7 ("Summer of 4 Ft 2" is one of the true defining character episodes.)

I�d say nothing or very few from seasons 5 and 6 and of course nothing past season 9.

I�d recommend you some of the Homer/Lisa episodes (including season 9�s "Lisa�s Sax") and some good satirical episodes such as "Homer The Heretic" and some good fun episodes such as "Last Exit".

I think The Simpsons makes so many American pop-culture references that someone not born here wouldn't really enjoy it as much as someone who'd actually run into real-life people LIKE Ned Flanders etc. Lisa Tsering

Good point! My wife is from Taiwan and only laughs at the slapstick stuff and the really obvious humor. When I laugh at the satire that she doesn't get, she wants to know what's funny, so I pause the show and explain it to her. Of course when you explain something it's no longer funny, so she really misses out on the finer points of the show.

I just showed the recent "crayon in the brain" episode to a newbie and they really enjoyed it -- plus it has the touching moment at the end with homer's letter. The other one I've shown newbies and had success with is the "vegetarian" episode where Lisa ruins the BBQ and chats with Apu and Paul McCartney.

The one with Sherry Bobbins will be loved if Mary Poppins was a childhood favorite.
