This threw me off, too. It's poor writing. It looks like Jon means, "...without feeling tired or bouncing from gag to gag like Homer did when he fell down Springfield Gorge" but I think what he really means is "...without feeling tired or bouncing from gag to gag like Homer bounced from rock to rock when he fell down Springfield Gorge."

In other words, bouncing down Springfield Gorge wasn't an example of "feeling tired or bouncing from gag to gag" but was actually an analogy for bouncing from gag to gag, with the analagous part being the bouncing from item to item.

No, in fact they suggest that it only found its footing during seasons three and four... and that it presumably peaked either then or after then. It doesn't give a specific season when things hit the "pit".

The reference is an -analogy- for jerky, frenetic writing. Everyone is tired of that analogy, though.
