Johnson was such a non-entity, yet he was foisted upon the viewers as if he was a popular celebrity. (He was probably a friend of a producer at the time. It's not who you know, but who you blow). He's remembered by my generation as a man of no talent, but a fine example of gimmicky marketing. Today, he would've been a "whazzzzzup" guy.
The Simpsons spoof this phenomenon from time to time.
