i really thought the above joke was funny, but i agree - the soccer mummy was just out of place and uncalled for. but i'm sure the writers are saying "as gabbo would say, we're bad widdle boys."

What you said "if someone doesn't like something, it means they don't understand it" is way too general a statement to make. How about if you don't understand something, you may not like it?

You may have understood the explanations people gave about the satire after-the-fact; but because you didn't get the satire at first does, in fact, mean you didn't understand the joke. Once jokes are explained, as you know, they aren't funny.

I'm not implying that you can't learn an appreciation of satire--even to the point of obsessively laughing at those type of jokes like many on this group do. The point is... not one person who understood the joke when they saw it complained about it, or called it a "boner" joke. It's possible they would have said it was a poor satire of the movie industry; but, nobody even said that.

Well, I didn't say it in the group until today, and now I wished I hadn't.

don't mean to butt in, but i completely understood the joke as satire as it was happening and thought it was damn funny (i thought of that piece of crap movie "ladybugs" with rodney dangerfield) but i didn't like the way the segment ended. so i understood it, but didn't like the boner reference thrown in at the end, which kind of sullied the rest of it for me, but not completely. one of the things the simpsons does really great is satire without resorting to things like boners, but oh well - the lower hollywood sinks, the lower the satire sinks too perhaps sometimes.

It's just an attempt to explain how to understand satire. The Simpsons is a satire from its most basic elements; it mocks the American family. This is (again, without intending to sound condescending) an attempt to help people understand jokes like the Soccer Mummy bit on "The Simpsons" on the next go-round.

Why not? This is a place to discuss things. Don't be embarrased; I didn't understand satire for the longest time. Once I did, the world got a whole lot funnier. I agree with you about The Simpsons always being funnier than Futurama, for example. It's not personal, Zed. :)

the world definitely IS funnier when you understand satire. another simpsons reference i think illustrates this (your) point well is from BABF22 "HOMR" when homer increases his IQ and becomes a satirical agent on his former before-the-surgery self (and other things). one scene from the episode in particular is when he goes to the movie "love is nice" with julia roberts et al. and they show some 15 seconds of the movie and it's just awful - "oh, my medication [falls into cake]" "radical!" "is that your final answer?" one of the main reasons that is so funny to me is that it's so unfunny in real life yet so many people love movies like that. notice homer, as pointed out by selma (patty?), was the only one not laughing in the whole movie theater (cause he's no longer the dumbass american male and gets perspective by being outside himself), and he's kicked out.

now, everything gets complicated if one actually *likes* movies like this and finds them funny. i suppose you can have both, but the satire is even funnier IMO when one doesn't find the object of that satire at all funny. for these reasons and more i think HOMR is classic. the satire is so thick it's like a squishy made entirely out of syrup!!!!!

yeah, although i wouldn't even really set foot near the door to the movie theater such a movie was playing in. as you pointed out earlier, which i think is important, it's not a condescending thing - i'm not so hyper-intelligent or something as to be above movies like that. i just don't find them funny. but you're right - it's not the simpsons resorting to boner jokes as filler or to get a cheap laugh (and having a bad joke flop) - it's the simpsons satirizing the fact that current movies are the ones using boner jokes and fart jokes to get a cheap laugh.

however, as Zed pointed out (which i read upon waking this morning - sorry, got real tired real fast last night) i think it's perfectly valid to simply not like the satire - even if you understand it and it's object. the satire itself may "simply not be funny" to some people.

I didn't find it funny. In fact, I didn't find that episode at all funny. And I have said it before.

I said I didn't like the joke and you said that I didn't like it because I didn't understand it. So that's not what you meant? I didn't find it funny, it may not be the "worst joke ever", I just said that thinking about all the losers who come on here every Sunday night at 8:31 PM saying that the new episode was "Worst Episode Ever" but you had no reason to reply to my post that said I didn't like the joke with "everything I don't understand is the worst ever, too." because you don't know if I understood the joke or not, you had nothing to base that on.

"everything I don't understand is the worst ever, too." (what you originally same) is not the same as "you may not like something you don't understand" but with both replys you making an assumption which is not very nice thing to do.

"satire" in quotation marks as opposed to satire. It's not good satire so I called it "satire".

The people who didn't understand it won't like it anymore now I think.

I am not embarassed, I don't like long messages like this and being misunderstood and seeing people make bad assumptions about me like you did, that's all. That's why I regret having posted the first message about not liking the joke.

Just going on the information in your post. Apparently a misinterpretation.

It just seemed that you were calling into question other people's comments on the joke, as if they didn't make sense. That led me to believe you didn't really understand the comments and explanations of "satire", as you put it.

Well, that wasn't the point. It was an attempt to show how to understand satire in the future. Explaining satire is hard without using examples. If people who didn't understand satire and didn't like the joke now understand satire, they almost certainly still don't find the joke funny. Explaining jokes doesn't make them funny, as illustrated by Chief Wiggum and Lou in that scene from "Tennis the Menace".

People get misunderstood here all the time. Most people here (and this from a few years experience on the group) are very understanding. In fact, most people probably don't give a sh*t about this thread! :) It's all good. My apologies again for misinterpreting your message. Friends?

I don't agree with the comments I have read about this satire/joke or even with the entire episode which I really didn't like. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Maybe people will understand the satire that will come in the new episodes now that you've explained the satire from "Jaws Wired Shut".

I have been around here for many years too and I find that a lot of people are not always understanding but that doesn't matter. It doesn't happen very often that I am misunderstood, what I normally get is a bunch of people disagreeing with me and everything, but that's ok too.

Hate to jump in the middle of your conversation, but I have to agree whole-heartedly here. That was some of the most obvious, heavy-handed "satire" I have ever seen, and we simply expect more from such a great show.

The Simpsons has a good chunk of its time on the air mocking Hollywood, the networks, pop culture without stooping to the level of whats its mocking. it seems a bit hypocritical to mock such movies with a "Boner joke" and then have homer proclaim "I'm Horny" or Moe's trip to Orgasmville in that very same episode.
