It is imposibile for the simpsons to live in kentucky. In one of the season 8 episodes (where homer hallucinates after eating too many chilies) marge said that homer went west, because springfield slopes down that way and he went to a coastal lighthouse. ie. springfield has a west coast and in episode 3G04 Springfield is on the west coast. After reading one of matt groening's articles in a book, he states that he comes from portland, oregon. In the south of Oregon there is a coastal mountain range which of course slopes towards the west.
In other words the Simpsons come from OREGON

In one episond, I believe it was Behing the Laughter, they state that the Simpsons are from Missouri, and in another episode they say that the school was moved FROM Missouri to where it is now. It wouldn't suprise me if at least one of the writers of the show visits this ng and laughs at the people claiming to know the location of Springfield, when they have made it impossible for it to be in any state in the union based on all of the information they have provided.
I don't recall if it has ever happened, but has anybody ever noticed if any episodes where you see the address on a letter or other piece of mail, if a zip code has ever been seen.

I think that everyone is missing the point. The Simpson live in Springfield. Not Springfield Kentucky, Ohio, Oregon. Just Springfield. It is kinda fun trying to figure out what state they live in, but I am sure that it was Groening's intent to set the show in the idealic, all american town. Just like the town on The Wonder Years, it is the town we all grew up in. So just remember, dont get mad at the person who says they live in Ohio or whatever just because you think they live in Kentucky. You both are right, and wrong.

Having grown up in Oregon, and having attended the same HS that MG went to, I can say Springfield bears a more than passing resemblance to Oregon. This is only natural. People don't create things out of thin air and expect it to have a sense of realism and a three-dimensionality (if you'll pardon the THOH pun).
However, it is obvious that the location of Springfield is nothing but a running joke the writers have been playing with for more than a decade now. I think they get off on people, once a week like clockwork, posting on here that they have the definative location for Springfield. All the Kentucky stuff is coming from an episode that was obviously a joke--after all, saying that the family were nothing but actors from Kentucky still doesn't answer the question of where Springfield is during the regular show. It's kind of like saying that Cheers really took place in LA because they filmed it in LA. Sorry, Cheers took place in Boston. Understand?
So all you folks can keep guessing, but if you go through all the seasons worth of clues, you will come to the inescapable conclusion that guessing is a waste of effort. After all, if you eliminate all the places where it can't be, you end up with Springfield not being able to be anywhere in the US.
