Season 3 was great!

- Is anybody unhappy with the DVD's? I knew season 3 was when the show started to come into its own, but I forgot how great these episodes were. The baseball episode may be my favorite ever. There isn't a single bad episode in the entire season. Many episodes in season 3 contend for greatest ever. Thoughts?

It's very good. I'd say that both season 2 and season 3 have 2 of my favorite 6 episodes. I don't feel it's any better than season 2, but I also don't think it's any worse.

Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington and Homer at the Bat are the best 2 of the season I think.

Yeah, there's many that would sometimes bitch about this season a lot. According to the commentaries, Julie Kavner and Dan Castelella(sp?) hated "Homer at the Bat" for the use of the all-star players, Jim Reardon complained about the animation that was sent back over from Korea for "When Flanders Failed", and it seems Matt himself didn't care for the "loop lines" and recycled animated sequences that were used throughout the season, as it gave FOX an idea to pull the same BS for their promos on saturday mornings.

For me, they where "Like father, like clown", "Burns verkaufen der kraftwerk" and "Brother, can you spare two dimes?" But there's a few others I can watch over and over.

I haven't gotten around to the commentaries, and those will be great, but seeing the episodes in their entirety without scenes cut like they are on t.v. makes the DVD sets outstanding by itself.

But, but season 12 is great...and 13.... oh, and 9! It's after seeing the old ones like 3, that really make you appreciate just how god awful the Simpsons have become.

I agree. On my very select list of favorite episodes, Seasons 3 & 4 are tied for the most episodes on the list with eight each. There are only 29 episodes on my entire list, and only three of those come from after Season 4. As I watch the Season 3 DVDs, I am struck at how much better the episodes were -- the pacing was more relaxed, the jokes were more sophisticated, the stories were character driven and the plots weren't so absurd. There is no doubt in my mind that Season 2 - 4 were the "golden age" and were never matched again. I have always contended that the day Bart got an elephant the show was never the same -- suddenly no plot was too "out there" to try and it only got worse as the years went by.

Yep, Season 3 was perhaps the best ever -- I'll have to wait (and wait and wait and wait) to watch the Season 4 DVD and see if it can unseat Season 3. It will be a hard task, because there were no weak episodes in Season 3. My least favorite episode of the year was "Stark Raving Dad" and it still beats almost anything we have seen in the last decade.

My only complaint about the DVDs are the audio commentaries. There are too many people on some of the episodes and they seem to flip between no one talking and everyone talking at once. Perhaps they should do two commentaries for each episode -- one with the writers, producers and directors and another with the actors...then we wouldn't have Julie Kavner saying "That's a beautiful shot" three times while Al Jean is trying to provide actual insight.

I don't see why anyone would be unhappy with the DVDs. I can't get a couple special features or easter eggs to work, but I'm still happy (me thinks it's my DVD player). This season was absolutely great. Some of the best episodes in the show's history come from this season.

In an episode by episode comparison, I think I might give season 2 the edge. Season 2 has episodes like The Way We Was, Lisa's Substitute, Two Cars In Every Garage... (maybe best episode ever?). Season 3 has Like Father, Like Clown and Mr. Lisa Goes To Washington. Either way, both seasons set some high water marks for every television show to follow.

-My only complaint deals with my own inability to locate the numerous easter eggs on the discs. There's a ton of them, none of which I can find.

Oh.. although it does bug me that audio outtakes are listed among the special features on the packaging insert, but they're hidden as easter eggs and not on any of the menus.

Season Three is great, though. "Homer at the Bat" is one of my all-time faves, as are a couple others from that season.
