Bart Simpson is officially cheating on Reverend Lovejoy's church -- with the one created by L. Ron Hubbard.

Nancy Cartwright -- voice of Bart and a multi-million dollar donor to Scientology -- has recorded a Scientology robocall in which she uses her famous character's name and voice to push an upcoming L. Ron Hubbard hoedown in L.A.

We called the phone number for the event that Nancy gives out, and the person who answered was surprised a non-Scientologist got the message -- thanks, YouTube.

We aren't usually much troubled by celebrities' affiliations with Scientology. Hell, Celine was a Nazi collaborator, and we still love his books. And we're not such fans of Look Who's Talking Too that Kirstie Alley's and John Travolta's religious beliefs would spoil it for us.

We do like Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson et alia, but because she's just a voice we don't have much opportunity to look at her and say, "She really believes little aliens live inside her and has given $10 million to the people who made her crazy."

That may be coming up in our heads more often, alas, since we heard this tape (found via Xenu TV) of Cartwright robo-calling for a Scientology event. It's not so much that she starts by saying, "This is Bart Simpson" -- she quickly says she's just kidding and identifies herself. But she keeps talking in the voice of Bart as she announces "I'm now auditing on New OTVII," says that she will "share my many wins" as an "auditor" at a the Hollywood Scientology event, and assures us, "It's gonna be a blast, man! (Bart laugh)" before asking us to call and confirm our attendance. It's as if we'd heard Bugs Bunny making a speech for Hamas ("Poisonally, Doc, I prefer jihad").

One thing about Scientology is that it's not about L. Ron Hubbard. There are plenty of cults where the leader is front and center, and often things fall apart when that leader dies. The Simpson's cult sure seemed similar to the Rajneehes (or however it's spelled, the ones with an Indian leader who all dressed in red and sex was involved and many live in Oregon), but also "The Children of God" and even the "Moonies". Then there was that saucer cult about 2000, the ones that killed themselves, that seemed to be a more direct source of the show.

One odd thing is that "cults" used to be a big thing, especially because of some well known incidents. It was the Moonies that took in "Benjie" and who's friends had him kidnapped, which caused a book "Moonwebs" and a movie of a similar name (actually, there were two, one was officially based on the book) and locally here (because the people were from here) the start of "The Cult Project" to handle this sort of thing. It's still there, but less visible.

The Scientologists have a made up "religion" (and read an early L. Ron Hubbard book and you'll see that he wasn't much more than a pulp writer before turning to starting a religion), but they have much more normal lives. 30 years ago, it was something to be wary of, but somehow they've become mainstream and a "religion" rather than a cult. Who knows, but since there seems to be less of the "cult" aspect of it, it seems more benign than a lot of leader worshipping cults.
