Excellent episode idea, not mine:

Okay, I seem to recall a few months ago somebody posted a question asking what the J in Homer J Simpson stood for (this was well after the episode with George Carlin was already in syndication). Somebody replied with a very in-depth description of Homer Boone, an episode where Homer discovers his middle name is Jebediah and sets out to discover Shelbyville or something, having gotten a bite from the "exploring" bug.

This episode idea was brilliant. Despite the fact that Homer's middle name was already revealed and is not Jebediah, this episode idea can still be tweaked to result in the same adventure (maybe Homer finds he was a direct descendant of Jebediah, only to find out in the end that it was another Jebediah who was the town drunk when Springfield was founded or something). I mean, the guy who wrote this even put in a decent sub-plot, IIRC.

Anybody have that message saved somewhere? Maybe you could repost it?

This idea is intriguing to me. I may have to steal it.

This sounds like an episode of the *Punky Brewster* cartoon: they go back in time to the colonial-days Chicago and the rich girl finds out that her great ancestor that she's so proud of started off as the town drunk and only became rich and respectable after he decided that seeing talking flying animals from another dimension was a good reason to get sober.

Jebediah. This was revealed in the episode (AABF02, "Homer Boone", 1998) when Homer goes searching for his middle name. He goes to the Hall of Records (Not the Good Kind, the Other Kind) and enlists the aid of the Kindly Old Clerk (Smidgely) who, intrigued by the meaning of Homer's initial, traces down the Simpson ancestry and finds that Homer is a distant descendant of Jebediah Springfield. Homer gets it into his head that he is meant to be a brave explorer, and starts dressing up like the old pioneer, in buckskin and a beaver hat, wandering around the neighborhood trying to "discover" new land. After an unsuccessful attempt to "discover" Flander's backyard and claim it for the Simpsons, he travels further afield meeting with several mildly amusing encounters. The climax comes when Homer "discovers" Shelbyville and tries to rename it Homerfield. When Marge, accompanied by Grandpa, have to bail him out of the Shelbyville jail, old Abe is finally able to explain to Homer that their branch of the family "never had nuthin' to do with that pioneerin' foolishness!" and Homer is placated. He realizes then that his "manifest destiny" is to watch a complete Gomer Pyle marathon; as he sits down in his usual spot in front of the t.v., he tells Marge to make sure there's plenty of beer in the fridge, as "it's gonna be a long night...and I'm gonna make old Jebediah proud!"

Then it changed to Jay. The episode (don't know title or number) where Homer finds the hippies his mom lived with. I think one was George Carlin. He ends up making some organic juice out of their peyote stash.
