In "Barts Inner Child" moe was italian,now he's dutch?

I think the main message in that (along with other stuff like that on the show), was that most of the people that were claiming that the Simpsons characters were unAmerican (on that show, I'm not talking about here on this ng) were not American themselves. But YES, you are correct that Moe claimed to be Dutch on the show. I don't know if he's claimed anything different previously. There's a gap in my Simpsons knowledge.

"Syzlak" is more likely Czech than Polish. Then again, where I grew up, there was a disproportional lot of half-Polish, half-Italian families.

Still, what does that have to do with snake-handling? With the exception of myself, every person of Polish descent that I've ever met was Catholic (either Roman or PNC), and snake handlers are a Protestant phenomenon.

Yeah, the snake-handling thing had to be just a throwaway gag. It was funny (in my opinion) on the basis that it totally contradicts literally everything we know about Moe. Snake handling Petacostal sects are a tiny group almost exclusivley limited to isolated rural American areas and made up of fanatics obsessed with spiritual purity. Whatever religion Moe was raised in, he is obviosly very lax; he speaks (in his adult life) with a gritty, urban-sounding accent that implies a lot of time in a large American city; he has an Eastern European last name and may also have Dutch, Italian and Arab ancestry, etc. Another gag about Moe that doesn't really correlate well with anything else in the show (but was also funny) was the idea that he was actually an illegal alien in the immigration episode. Some jokes can be reconciled with other "facts" about the characters and others are on the level of Homer's claim that his blue pants cost $600.

I don't think Moe being one of the original Little Rascals can be reconciled with the rest, either. He's just not old enough. As for the illegal immigrant thing, the counselor in "The Way We Weren't" says that his parents abandoned him when he was a kid (although he implies in "Flaming Moe's" that he still lives with his mother, so I guess that's another contradiction), so maybe he just slipped through the cracks somehow. Could he be an illegal immigrant AND on a permanent visa, though?

So that's how Moe "hears" his conscience? He's so unsure about his heritage that he thinks the stereotypical way Italians speak is actually a stereotype of the Dutch?

Remember, he had on wooden shows. That's a stereotype of the Dutch, and real shoes are more concrete than a voice in your head.

On the other hand, I gather that wooden shoes did appear in other countries. In "Ringolevio", Emmett Grogan talks of being in the Italian Alps and wearing wooden shoes.

I believe you are over-analyzing. This is probably the result of too much unused brainpower. Try some mental calisthenics before watching the show, like calculating the trajectories of the stars in the five nearest galaxies. You'll enjoy the show much more.
