Anyone have an opinion on the best season?

I'd have to say that Season Two was the best... it was beautiful :)

My opinion:

Seasons One through Three are the greatest.

Seasons Ten through Thirteen (so far) are the worst.

The rest of the seasons are hit and miss, with the number of misses increasing proportionally with the season number.

I agree with Jake that it was a turning point. Seems like they tried too hard to breathe life into the show by breaking its own rules. We have 4F04, 4F07, and 4F09 where they started/ended things that were to carry on into other episodes. 4F07 kinda destroyed Ned's character a bit. 4F12 was where the writers themselves acknowledged a desire to "change" the show. 4F20 seems like cotton candy fluff now, as does 4F05. The rest of the season wasn't bad--and even the above mentioned episodes weren't bad. They were just... not nearly as good as 1-7.

S2-9, best season being 4...S5 is a close second.

I agree. :-) To quote David Silverman quote from 1998:

"And many of us, Brad Bird always points out he's our Executive Consultant, very good artist and a brilliant director, he always felt that the second season the episodes were all great. Great storylines, every episode seemed to cover a great emotion or a great arc of character and just really funny and some really cool direction from the various directors. [...]"

Amen. Season 2 rules. I say it all the time but nobody believes me :-)
