I CANNOT believe they got away with a Tom of Finland joke on a TV-PG rated episode. Yeah, Homer had a book of Mapplethorpe but at least Mapplethorpe was national news for a while.

I thought I heard somewhere later in the episode that the original music teacher was merely on "sabbatical". I can't remember at what point, or exactly what was said, but something was said. Wait. It was maybe the fact that the Jennifer Juniper was merely a substitute. She didn't come across as a substitute until that point, so when I heard her referred to as that later, it seemed like they were just going to revert to the old teacher, and "act like nothing ever happened".

He doesn't want to be publicly seen as gay?

Oddly, suddenly he isn't hiding it. There was a time when his sexuality was ambiguous, surely deliberately because it made for better story lines. I can't remember at which point that changed. I don't think it was this episode, after all no fanfare, but I can't remember when.

I don't think it's that HE hides it as much as the fact that the show itself hides it. I always thought "blatant" homosexuality was one of the things that would cause an episode to jump to TV-14 - one of the show's few "Viewer Discretion Advised" episodes was "There's Something About Marrying" (although "Glee" never has a warning even though it's always TV-14) - yet this episode was TV-PG even with the Smithers-Moe kiss.
