season 13 vs. season 14

you know, im too lazy to give my full opinion right now. This is more just to provoke other people's opinions on the new season versus the former one, or at least some opinions on the new season.

well to start something off, i think both seasons were quite a bit better than 12. and 14 was slight improvement over 13. 13 and 14 both had many more promising episodes than i expected. The endings have greatly improved. Instead of Otto running in to escape a plot hole, they are usually more clever (Mr. Spritz Goes to Washington). Overall, nothing amazing has happened, to prove the show great again. but still, like i said, promise has been show. I actually think 'Moe Baby Blues' demonstrates it the best, with a nice somewhat touching sentiment, followed by a somewhat effective joke. Most episodes of the season did try to sneak some emotion in, and did it much better than anything in the Sculley days. Another pro is Homer is much less of an asshole. People can argue that, but i guarantee you, that if you went back and watched season 10, 11, and 12, and then watched 13 and 14 you'll see the difference. opinions are very welcome.

Comparing 13 & 14 to 10 - 12 is kind of like trying to decide which sucks less. I will admit that 10 - 12 was the worst. Anything is an improvement.

I couldn't agree more. There has been a slight improvement, but I might have finally started lowering my standards, too. Either way, the majority of the last two seasons have still been pretty crappy. You might have less crap, but there's still a lot of it.

I agree 100% - but this is no longer the case. It was the case in season 5, and in seasons 9-12, but isn't any longer.

it's got a long way to go before it gets to the standards of the classic era (1-8) but it's miles better than 10-12, and better than 9 in many areas, especially characterisation. however in our glorious jump-the-shark culture, most people are too worried about looking like a square by admitting recent episodes are actually kinda decent. I mean, how cool do you look when you say "doodz, the Simpsons was good like 5 years ago, like in 1994 or something, y'know, when Conan was on the show, but it sucks now. it's all wacky storylines like Homer going to space or a comet colliding with the earth, and Homer yelling at everyone like a mindless idi -- oh wait, that was season 5. man am I dumb.". Supercool. Nevertheless, if you talk to knowledgeable, intelligent fans of the show who have been watching for more than 6 months, who actually "get" it, and who judge new episodes realistically, they will admit there has been a significant improvement in the last two years, even if there is a long way to go to get to 1-8 quality.

I was arguing that when Homer goes beyond a certain point, it gets annoying. There is a difference between yelling when you're mad and being very malicious to the point of being an asshole. Homer has been an asshole for years, but it wasn't nearly as common in season five as it was in season 10.

I would consider myself an intelligent knowledgable fan of The Simpsons. I have been watching it since the Tracey Ullman days. That doesn't make me "supercool." Being (overly) critical of the show doesn't make me cool unless getting crap for being critical from lots of people makes you cool. The average person still loves The Simpsons; it's the "supercool" critics that are calling changing their minds.

I also never say Conan was the reason the show was great. He wrote a handful of less than stellar episodes (plus the very funny wraparounds for one of the THOH). His job as a producer wasn't bad, but he wasn't the best producer by any stretch of the imagination.

Finally, I admit the show has gotten better with season 14 (and maybe 13), but it's still got a long way to go to be considered great. Season 14's finales (Moe Baby Blues and Bart Of War) were my favorite episodes of the last few seasons.

I suppose I was being a bit critical with saying season 14 was crap, but less crap is still crap no matter how much less there is. Improvement is improvement though and I'm glad to see it. I'm not going to be one of those people that says, "Even the worst episode of The Simpsons is still better than the best episode of Friends/Raymond/show of the moment." If/When the show gets back up to that level, I'll say that again.

Before the Scully era, Homer was a lovable asshole with redeeming qualities. Then, he became a tyrannical asshole. That's one of the things that turned me off the Scully era Simpsons.

Now, he's just a shadow of his former self. He's not an asshole, not even a lovable one, and he's no longer funny.

I agree. though season 5's Homer was a problem, season 10's Homer was a huge problem. though certain season 5 episodes are quite shocking in terms of Homer's domineering assholism - Boy Scoutz N The Hood, Homer Goes To College.

yeah, i wasn't referring to you at all, more to a stereotype of today's modern "Simpsons sucks now, y'know, cause it does and stuff" moron. you seem sensible enough.

Bart Of War was pretty good with some fine social commentary, however Moe Baby Blues was truly superb (and the best episode since season 8 IMO) and is probably the only post-S8 episode that wouldn't look below average in any season before 9. Moe Baby Blues was almost classic quality IMO, if they can make a whole season of episodes at that level, it'll be a "classic season". Special Edna, A Star Is Born-Again, The Dad Who Knew Too Little, Half-Decent Proposal, Mr. Spritz Goes To Washington, Three Gays Of The Condo and Little Girl In The Big Ten are some other great Jean era episodes. Even if they would look a bit substandard in the "classic era", it is still clever, witty, and hilarious television. season 14 was very encouraging, but still far from "great" or classic era quality, I agree.

Well I couldn't agree more as regards "even the worst episode is better than
99% of TV" type comments.  Seasons 10-12 were just bad, no matter what you
compare it to.   However I maintain that S14 Simpsons is in the upper
echelon of television, and is consistently far cleverer and far funnier than
your average bottom-feeding sitcom.   Look at it this way - if S14 of The
Simpsons was an entirely new show, it would get so many "Doodz, "S14 of the
Simpsons" is the best cartoon show since The Simpsons! "S14 of The Simpsons"
thoroughly kicks the ass of recent Simpsons, anyway." thrown at it that it
would spontaneously combust.
