Krusty's always dropping names of famous people, but they're never (or rarely) A-list celebrities. For example, in a recent episode he mentioned he was neighbors with Elliot Gould. Without doing an Internet search, I can't tell you who he is or what he's done. With Krusty, it's always someone like that.
Is it an ongoing joke that Krusty's limited to that level of stardom, or am I just celebrity-ignorant?

Can you give some more examples? Elliot Gould is too well known to support your hypothesis, though perhaps you are too young.

But that's the present, and isn't what he would be well known for.
Think MASH, the movie. He was a main character in that, and around the same time he was in plenty of movies and considered pretty big. You might also know him for such fine films as "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice", "Capricorn One", "A Bridge too Far" and some Disney films around 1980. It doesn't look like he really stopped making movies, but obviously his roles have been less significant in recent years or decades.

Actually, I think that it's more accurate to say that many of Krusty's celebrity references are towards Borshct-belt era Jewish comics and such. I think that the Krusty character itself is actually strongly patterned after that, in fact.

two things, first while not meaning to insult, you may just be celebrity ignorant, in the sense that if it's not someone who is constantly (or frequently) in the news, you may not be aware of their existence. secondly, while these actors/singers etc. may not be the Ben Afflecks and Jodie Fosters, they are talented people, some people use up all their fame briefly, and some (like Elliot Gould) spread it out...
