Tense...peed?

I seem to have a dim racial memory of an ancient time when bicycles with ten speeds were manufactured using stone knives and bearskins....

Seriously, though, are there any companies still making ten-speed bikes for the mass market?

(For those on r.b.m who have no idea what I'm talking about, there was a *Simpsons* episode tonight that featured supposedly really cool bikes with drop bars and all, referred to as "ten speeds." I'm figuring that no one on the show has bought a bike in the last quarter-century or so, but I suppose someone could still be making a ten-speed bike with drop bars for kids.)

Nope, no more ten speeds. Well, I HAVE seen some extraordinarily cheap bikes made in India and imported here to Canada that had 5 or 6 speed freewheels about 5 years ago, but that's about it. They have 10 speed cassettes now however...

I thought the same thing, that it was odd that the "gang" were being cool with racing bikes rather than the now normal "mountain bikes".

Racing bikes were the norm at one point, if you wanted an adult bike, but once mountain bikes were invented, they slowly moved from fringe to the point where they are everywhere.

Actually, when Bart caught up with the gang, precisely because they were racing bikes, I thought we'd see a reference or two to "Breaking Away".

Bart's first bike looked a lot like the bikes that were cool when I was a kid in the late sixties. And that adaptor kit (how come Millhouse had it, but it lands on Bart's bike?) brings a vague memory of something that was available back then.

Companies like Peugeot and Motobecane, which each took their place at the top of the bicycle manufacturing heap, have fallen by the wayside. Peugeot makes @#$%%& cars, too, BTW.

I have a Raleigh Super Record (a touring bike, not a racing bike) that is old as the hills. And it has 10 speeds. And it is the best $175 I ever spent in my entire life. And I have the leg muscles to prove it. I have to replace the tires every two or three years, but I have never replaced the brakes. My dad has an ancient 10 speed Schwinn. He still rides it. He is 80 years old.
