"The Good Old Days" of the Simpsons - Myth or Reality?

People on these boards are always bemoaning the fall of the Simpsons from its "Golden Age" in the early to mid 90s to the "drivel" of 1999 or so, which some believe has continued to this day. They complain that the plots have gotten more and more unrealistic. That Homer has become stupider and a bigger jerk than ever.

While I agree that Seasons 4-6 are probably the best in the series, I would caution against the above statements. You know, Homer was very stupid, and acted like a jerk, long before Season 9. And The Simpsons had wild, unrealistic plotlines very early on. I do agree that the show isn't as fresh any more, but I don't agree that Homer has gotten more idiotic or jerk-assed. Homer is a jerk, or rather just oblivious to everyone else's feelins, most of the time, but then he can go and be really endearing. This is as true this season as it was 8, 12, 15 years ago.

I've been watching the Simpsons since I was a child (am now 20 years old) and I don't notice a significant difference between the older episodes and the newer ones. In fact, a couple of my favorite episodes come from the later seasons (13 and 14 specifically). But I just CAN'T STAND the new season. I enjoyed I D'oh-bot and the one where they go to England is mildly amusing, but the others just kind of leaving me scratching my head and saying "Was that really an episode of the Simpsons?" The Wandering Juvie was such a non-episode. Bart goes to jail for having a fake wedding? Is that even against the law? That episode didn't even make me chuckle. I can't believe that I seem to be the minorty in thinking that this season of the Simpsons just doesn't cut it.

The one where Moe and Barney show up in the Simpsons house toward the end wearing maids uniforms for no reason should also be added to your list.

I think Simpsons have been cool untill season 7. Season 8 was still good but not as the others. From season 9 I think that every new episode sucks more than the episode before.

There is a Simpson's episode where they are watching a "Star Trek" movie on TV. At the beginning of the movie, you see the aged cast on the bridge. Sulu turns to Kirk and says something like "5 Romulan Warbirds dead ahead, sir", and Kirk sighs, looks bored, and says "ah, ... again?". Eventually the Simpsons will be worn out and maybe the writers will remember this scene and turn it on OFF. Homer can come home and say "I GOT FIRED" and Lisa sigh, look bored, and say "ah, ... again?".

There was a time when I would be in knots laughing at the simpsons, even though the plots were unrealistic, (e.g. Homer goes into space, and so on), but nowadays I look at them and just chuckle a few times, and the plots have become wildly surreal and wierd... The last hilarious episode I remember was the Frank Grimes one... Or was it the Angel one... whichever came second.
