DYN For Mr. Plow 02/14/05

I was just checking www.snpp.com and the Mr. Plow episode, which I saw last week. For the 1st time in years. At www.snpp.com, the web site maintainers say that the scene with Homer driving the plow over the bridge is reminiscent of something from an Indiana Jones movie. And that if anyone brings it up they will scream.

Well, help is on the way. In the 1977 movie "Sorcerer", Roy Scheider drove a truck filled with nitro glycerin over a rickety bridge. The scene where Homer drives the plow over the bridge and the pieces of the bridge fall off and so on is very reminiscent of Scheider's drive in "Sorcerer".

There were no dogs that barked and spit pieces of the bridge out of their mouths, and Roy Scheider was not eating Jiffy Pop popcorn during that scene. And, Roy Scheider is not the basis for Roy.

Of course "Sorcerer" was a re-make of "Wages of Fear". As for "no such thing as a 'new' idea", I remember reading the story in the Old Testament about the Assyrians who drove the dynamite laden truck over the rickety bridge to put out the oil well fire in Mesopotamia. Then Shakespeare stole that story and put it into one of his plays. The one about that merchant who lived in Venice. But I can't remember the name of the play. I'm glad you mentioned that, because the minute I read the first post I thought "but wasn't there a much older film that had a similar scene?".

But I only saw it as a kid, quite young, so the only thing I remember is a bit about how dangerous the nitro was.
