The Post That Will Forever END All "Springfield" Questions

Everyone, let's look to 1F06, "Boy-Scoutz N The Hood" for a moment. When Bart and Milhouse go crazy (Broadway style) a very memorable song, "Springfield, Springfield" is sung by the two and a sailor. The "On The Town" parody gives us the most definitive clue ever as to the state that Springfield in. In the original "New York, New York, It's A Hell of a Town!" the syntax is clearly "city, state." Let's apply that to "Springfield, Springfield." There you have it. The state that Springfield is in is... SPRINGFIELD! Think about how this applies to so many jokes used in the past. When Larry Burns asks, "Springfield? What state?" the conductor could very well be saying "That IS the state!" And so on. This is about as good as evidence and as close to an answer as we're ever going to get.

if we could find out in which direction bart was pointing when he told the sailor guy which way new york was, then we could drastically reduce the number of states. For example, if he was pointing west, then it could only be a new england state.

springfield is set somewhere on the west coast of america (cos i'm sure the sun was setting on the horizon of the ocean one time...)

but the fact that the simpsons could travel to both las vegas and new york without flying and with relative speed shows that the creators of the simpsons have no real idea where the simpsons is themselves. it exists on the coast of america, thats it...thats all anyone bothered to come up with, and you really are wasting your time thinking that its important to know where it is, cos the show's creators didnt so why should you bother?

=v= Agreed. Since none of the other 50 states have a state flag with "Not Just Another State" written on it, Springfield it is! And, like New York, the capital is elsewhere -- though, unlike Albany, Capital City is the big bustling Windy Apple.

=v= Note also that even the next show works the same way. The _King_of_the_Hill_ characters live in the great state of Texas in the great nation of Texas. See the "Bendin' In The Wind" episode of _Futurama_ to learn what state New New York is in.
