Sandy pants

Hi,

Can someone explain the joke in the episode where Marge and Homer go to the beach and Homer says "I've got sand in my pants", Marge says "Me too, lets go" and then homer shoves a handful more down and shakes about.

I thought it was more of a basic joke- Marge wants to go because she doesn't enjoy the feeling of sand in her clothes (I can't think of anyone IRL who does either), and Homer apparently really, really enjoys sand down his pants.

There is something to be said for the feeling of sand against skin... squirming your toes into the sand, or being burried up to your neck. Though I am not someone who has intentionally put sand down his pants, I can sort of see why Homer might have enjoyed it. It seems to me very much like the sort of thing Homer would enjoy.

No, no! This is the "Simpsons" and therefore must have deeper meaning.

The sand obviously represent the inner torment suffered by every working man. Homer realizes that he will be "ground down by life". So, with a symbolic act, he accepts the inevitable by adding more grit to the "millstone".
