Joke explanation please....

On the Super Bowl episode, in the bar, Moe tells about the football team, and puts a glass in front of his mouth, and says "the Atlanta Falcons". This joke is lost on me, can anyone explain it? Thanks!

At the time the episode was in production, no one knew which teams would be in the Super Bowl. The name of the team was added to the soundtrack just before the episode aired. The mug covering Moe's mouth was meant to make it seem as though the animators were trying to slip in the late addition without us noticing but drawing even more attention to it thereby. Thus, the joke.

The joke is supposed to be that the glass in front of the mouth stops you seeing the lips synching with the pronunciation of the words. In this case "the Atlanta Falcons" must have won that year. Same goes for the President lip un-synch they do a few seconds later if my memory serves me correctly. IE whoever is the big cheese that year will get dropped into the script.( I only losely follow American football as i am from the UK,( Go Raiders ) but even I don't remember the Atlanta Falcons winning the Superbowl. Did they ? ). So if in the next years to come when that episode is shown, they can dub in the name of the winning team without losing the synchronization of the lips, because of course you can't see them behind the glass.

I suppose it was a play on shows that do that sort of thing. As of course the Simpsons writer/producers had no intention of ever actually re dubbing the script to fit the times.

Moe's team is the Atlanta Falcons. Homer likes the Denver Broncos (who won the Superbowl). the guy sitting with them, who books the superbowl trip, says something about the president <Bill Clinton. this was a reference to Bill's impeachment. Writers did not know who would be in the Superbowl, or if Clinton would have been kicked out of office or not at the time. thus the mugs over the mouth to obscure the overdubs.

Yeah but in the Hank Scorpio episode (forgive me for not going to look up the title and P code), he said his dream was to own the Cowboys and then at the end Hank gave him the Broncos and Homer was really disappointed.

I think he said "likes them" meaning that's who Homer thought would win. Not that's it's his favorite team overall.
