Electrocution is NOT funny

- Ever since Al Jean came back, there has been an electrocution in nearly every episode. It's fucking lame. It ruined the last Sideshow Bob episode and it is easily the least funny ongoing Simpsons joke that ever existed. Fucking quit it! I honestly wish Scully would come back. Al Jean is a lame-ass.

Come off it. The electroction jokes are some of the funniest. The one where Quimby is demonstrating the electric chair, and the safety is off. The one where they have a solar powered electric chair, and clouds mean the prisoner gets only a low level shock. The time the tornado hits and the convict flies away from the electric chair, only to be killed when he comes into contact with power lines. Frank Grimes grasping the bus bar with both hands and saying "I don't have to worry, I'm an idiot". And it goes on.

I don't really think such jokes have become more frequent as time goes by. They seem to be relatively constant.

Being electrocuted or shocked is not funny, is not fun.

But that's where the joke lies. We know nobody is being killed, we know nobody is being hurt, when someone is shocked or electrocuted on the Simpsons. If it was real, it would not be funny. But since it's not, it becomes terribly funny.

As a small technical aside, you have to die as a result of receiving an electric shock to be electrocuted. In this case, the only person who was electrocuted was Frank Grimes. All the others you refer to received an electric shock.

I love early Woody Allen films, and some of the funniest stuff in there is when someone is seemingly hurt. They're in a locker room in Bananas, and Woody slams a locker door closed, and it happens to close on someone's hand. Just writing that makes me laugh. But I've done that to myself, and in reality it's not one bit funny. If I knew someone was really being hurt in a movie or tv show with such things, I just would not find it funny. I don't watch "America's Funniest Home Videos" because I know people actually have been hurt or nearly hurt, and that's not funny.

I have given myself a few shocks, decades ago. Not deliberatly, but because I accidentally touch some high voltage points. I remember one time particularly when the shock made me bang my elbow agains a nearby surface as I moved away from the high voltage point. My memory is that the elbow was sore for a while.

So there is absolutely nothing funny about someone really being hurt.

But if done properly, I do find it quite funny. And Frank Grimes killing himself is as funny as the other high voltage scenes in the Simpsons; I can laugh because I know he is just a cartoon character.

It was pretty funny when my friend's dad electrocuted himself a few years ago. He cut through some carpet and into a power cable, but luckily he just got a jolt instead of death. He did jump backwards and land on his arse though, which added to the comedy. I had to walk away because I don't think he'd have appreciated being laughed in his face...
