The Negotiator is a 1998 film starring Samuel L. Jackson as a top police negotiator who is framed for murder. Knowing full well that the cops in his precinct are corrupt, he comes up with a unique way to buy time to find proof of his innocence: he starts taking hostages himself and has a top negotiator from another precinct (played by Kevin Spacey) to be the one to negotiate with him.

Krusty's "Chinese toys that kill kids" comment refers to the recent product recall of various toys made in China due to them having high levels of lead paint.

The background music while the Dilbert ride is visible is "The Dilbert Zone", the theme song from the short lived Dilbert cartoon and a re- arrangement by Danny Elfman of the "Forbidden Zone Theme" from the film of the same name.

In that old movie that Marge was watching, the conversation between the priest and the convicted gangster is highly reminiscent of the dialogue between Pat O'Brien and James Cagney near the end of "Angels with Dirty Faces" (1938).
