3F06 Mother Simpson brings a tear to my eye every time I see it.
When I first saw it, I was waiting for Homer to do something leading to a "D'OH!", but when he just sat there by himself and looked up at the stars, it broke me down.
Heck, I'm getting chocked up just thinking and writing about it.

absolutely, it's my favorite ending too. that ending is so, well, sad and thought provoking. in my opinon, that ending did more for Homer's character than pretty much anything he'd done before and makes him seem almost human. the way he's sitting there in the sunset, then late into the night with the stars in the sky.... everyone's had nights like that for one reason or another, and can actually empathize with him, which is unusual when it comes to Homer.
i'd like to see some high quality screen captures of those two shots.

Agreed. My favorite ending. My second fav. is Lisa's date with Density. The poor dog.
More than any other episode, I liked the end of "Separate Vocations." Hell, I liked the whole darn episode. (I don't want your pity.)
In general, my favorite endings are the ones that send a chill up the spine, or perhaps put a lump in the throat, although admittedly a Simpsons episode never did for me the latter. A good episode, for me, will have a good plot, and a good ending will conclude this plot most effectively. As Chris Pfeiler would certainly point out, most of the episodes focusing on Lisa Simpson have dramatic, heart-warming endings, and I find most of those episodes' endings very enjoyable. Other great endings can be found in the episodes that hint at the potential of the characters, and episodes that have a nostalgic or otherwise bitersweet finale.
As a nod to Futurama, who lies now on its deathbed, I very much enjoyed the endings both of "Luck of the Fryish," and "Parasites Lost." The show overall lacked humanity--they just weren't real enough--but endings like that make up for a lot.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but my favorite ending is the one with Homer's mother. Homer sits on his car and watches the stars as a wonderfully serene piece of music plays. It's surprisingly moving.

aye - "do .. it .. for .. her" is probably my favorite of episodes. i like the "evil animals" episodes, too. namely the dog at the end of the gibson episode and the koala at the end of the australia episode. ^_^

The end of the spring break ep is great, mainly because it self-reflexively (but subtly) points out all of the loose ends not wrapped up at the end of the show.
