RIP Chuck Jones (1913-2002)

Chuck Jones, the creator of Bugs Bunny, as well as many other great Warner Bros. characters, died tonight. Rest in Peace to a great cartoonist.

The greatest of all. I'm glad I went with the hunch and wrote to him last year telling him how he inspired me. I loved the Jones Tom and Jerry cartoons. They were the most beautiful cartoon shorts ever made.

I'm going to avoid saying the obvious pun.

A truly great has died, when people you don't know die, you often get asked "what did they ever do for you?" most of the time the answer is nothing. Finally someone has died that you can answer this question without saying "nothing".

A true animation pioneer he was. His work has indirectly affected the Simpsons, as he worked with MGM's "Tom & Jerry", which Itchy & Scratchy are based upon.

Who said Jones created Tom & Jerry? They date to the late 1920's.

Nope...you're off by about 10 years. The very first Tom and Jerry cartoon, called "Puss Gets The Boot" was released on Februrary 20, 1940.

I'm a fan of the older (1940's, early 50's) Tom & Jerry's myself. Yeah, they were blatantly sexist & racist, but they were a hoot.

The scary thing is that it's not all that exaggerated. The 30's-40's T&J were remarkably violent, and it was wonderfully free of consequences. They also won a lot of Oscars. Not to speak ill of the recently dead, but the Chuck Jones T&J's were absolutely off-key (as he himself admitted on Tom Snyder in the late 70's/Early 80's). The 70's "Tom and Jerry Cartoon Show" Saturday morning episodes were fecal at best - who ever was involved should be made to watch an endless loop of "Chilly Willy" for a week, both as punishment and training.

This may be considered a plea for help, but I've watched every Tom and Jerry cartoon at least 10 times. I&S are a parody, but also an homage (note that the viewers always end up laughing) but it's not that far off.

The most violent of all, of course, are the early "Woody Woodpecker".

Funny, I always thought that I&S were a parody of Famous Studios "Herman and Katnip" series. Certainly this series was much more full of gratuitious violence than T&J ever was.

I remember those. They were disgusting. The only thing seperating H&K from I&S was that there was no spurting blood. There was a mouse that always murdered Katnip, and also a crow. I can't remember which was Herman. I think the crow had an un-PC "Al Jolson"-esque voice, IIRC

I & S is more a satire of cartoon violence. It's neither a putdown nor a homage.

Actually he did not create Bugs Bunny, he did work on Bugs Bunny cartoons, but wasn't the creator. His most famous creations were Wile E. Coyote (my favorite), Road Runner, Marvin Martian, and Pepe Le Pew among many other secondary characters.

I'd also like to "second" the opinion that his Tom and Jerry episodes were the best of the bunch. His work on "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is definitive Jones, his cartoons are always easy to recognize do to his unique drawings.

You will be miss Chuck, one of the early gods of animation!
