    "Good news, everyone!  Apparently, somebody at Fox forgot that
    Futurama airs at 7:00 Eastern, so they scheduled an 'early' NFL
    playoff game for January 13, which means everybody gets a new
    episode!"  (The only explanation I can think of: somebody at CBS
    thought there was a chance the Raiders would be playing their
    home game on Sunday and pencilled in the 4:00 Eastern time
    rather than have the Raiders play at 9:30 AM local time.  In
    fact, the Raiders game is on Saturday; CBS is showing the Miami
    game (against Baltimore, if the Ravens beat Seattle, or the Jets,
    if the Seahawks win) at 4:00 Eastern.)
    Where was I?  Oh yes...
    When the Planet Express ship is attacked in space, Bender
    ejects and ends up on a planet whose tiny civilization
    considers him to be a god

1/20 - There has to be at least one AFC game played in the east
       somewhere, as two AFC division champions have to host games
       this weekend (one on Saturday, one on Sunday), so don't
       expect an episode in the east today either; in the west,
       "Bendless Love" (Bender becomes a strikebreaker and falls in
       love...with Flexo's ex-wife) will air

1/27 - Expect more of the usual, UNLESS the AFC Championship ends up
       in Oakland (and the NFC Championship is not in San Francisco),
       in which case CBS would most likely show the 4:15 game that
       day (as they did last year), and Fox could schedule a new
       episode (although they would have only one week's notice).

2/3 - Fox will show the Super Bowl followed by an hour of "Malcolm in the Middle".

GOOFS / FREEZE FRAME / WHATNOT This is the first new non-Halloween episode since September 27, 1998 ("Bart the Mother" (5F22)) that did not have a blackboard opening.

For a show that's been cutting corners with things like looping backgrounds lately, they certainly got the Monopoly board accurate. (For example, when Homer landed on Marvin Gardens, the spaces around it had the correct names and colors.)

When Homer paid Bart, the $1 bills were mostly black.

Homer's "first" ring is never visible except when he has to put on his second one.

It's commonly held that Nader's running in 2000, which drew votes away from Al Gore, cost the Democrats the election; the joke in this episode is of course that this was a plot devised by closet Republican Nader. But for what it's worth, Nader has never registered as a member of the Green Party, even while running as their Presidential nominee.

Like I said, wasn't sure. Hell I can't remember the last time I played monopoly where the instructions were still intact. We usually have to go from memory to know how much money everyone gets.

Stigmata refers to the mysterious, spontaneous, and unexplained bleeding of the palms, feet, side, and brow of certain holy and religious people. This is to coincidize with the wound suffered by Christ on the Cross (nails in the hands and feet, sword in the sign, crown o' thorns on the head). The first and most notable is St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th Century.

Let's just say that Bart would not be a likely candidate to have stigmata.

Well, David Cohen went to Berkeley (after Harvard); might I assume they're related and went to the same school? I read that "Joel" is also the name of David's uncle, so perhaps it's his namesake. (By the way, at Berkeley, Cohen worked on a computer science theory problem previously explored by none other than Bill Gates during and after the latter's brief time at - where else? - Harvard. Both their co-authors were at Berkeley during my time there.)

Side note: I watched this episode with a fellow Cal alum and fellow Stanford student, after making us all a nice dinner of - what else? - falafel.
