Inaccuracies Plague Marge's History Tour

I finally got around to watching Margical History Tour last night and was appalled by the first segment, which, instead of parodying history, distorted it to an unnecessary degree. To wit:

1) Catherine of Aragon (Marge in this ep) actually died BEFORE Anne Boleyn did. In fact, Catherine's death directly caused Anne's beheading. After Catherine died, Henry's Lord Chancellor, Thomas Cromwell, thought an alliance with Spain would be beneficial, but knew that Spain would demand that the daughter of Henry and the Spanish Catherine be recognized in the succession to the crown. Knowing Anne B would never go for this, Cromwell devised slanderous charges of adultery and treason against her, whereupon she and five innocent men were beheaded. A Catherine did outlive Henry, but it was Henry's 6th wife, Catherine Parr, not Catherine of Aragon.

2) Henry actually got his male heir (who became the shortlived King Edward IV) through his brief third marriage to Jane Seymour, who died in childbirth. She was not executed for having a whiny voice.

  • The Archbishop of Canterbury was not black.

Of course, some distortion is funny, but one should not play fast and loose with history if one is an influential educational tool like the Simpsons. I can already see the history teachers of the next generation trying to dissuade young minds of the notion that Henry VIII married a stoner dude.

While the other two segments were, to my knowledge, 100% historically accurate, I sure hope someone got fired for the first one!

Didn't Rev. Lovejoy play the part of Archbishop Thomas Cranmer? Add in the fact that Henry and Anne Boleyn were married in secret on a date we still do not know for sure.

Was Lisa supposed to be the future Mary I? I expected at least a glimpse of Maggie as Elizabeth.

I know that Catherine of Aragon died in January 1536, but it is more fun for ther to smother Henry. Marge's version is more fitting.

The bit gave the impression that Lisa would be the future queen of England, But that was Elizabeth, not Mary. Elizabeth was Anne Bolyen's daughter, not Catherine of Margerine, er Arragon.

Yeah my bad. She had a brief, disastrous reign from 1553 to 1558.

And they both had ocean liners named after them.

Actually, the RMS Queen Mary was named after Queen Mary (of Teck), wife of King George V. Not sure if the RMS Queen Elizabeth was named after the Virgin Queen or after Queen Elizabeth (Bowes-Lyon), wife of King George VI.

And when they launched the Queen E II (or was it the Queen Mary II?) recently, they said it was not named after the Queen, but after the ship that had been named after the Queen.

Though the Tudor warship 'The Mary Rose' was named after the then-infant bloody queen. Until it sank.

The latter.

Well, if you're going to count warships, the battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth (saw action in both World Wars) must have been named after Elizabeth I, though I'd guess the battle-cruiser HMS Queen Mary (sunk at Jutland 1916) was probably named after the then-reigning Queen. In one of the James Bond novels (I think "On Her Majesty's Secret Service), M tells the anecdote of HMS Queen Elizabeth encountering RMS Queen Elizabeth in mid-Atlantic and signalling "snap!"

The Queen Mary ocean liner wasn't named after that Queen Mary, but after the Queen Consort of George V.

The story goes that the company having the ship built (Cunard IIRC) wanted to name it the Queen Victoria, and wanted royal assent for this. So they went to the then King and asked something to the effect of, "May we name our newest ship after the greatest Queen this country has known?" George V replied, "The Queen will be *delighted* when I tell her you wish to name your newest ship after her!"

You could be right -- I thought it was Hibbert, but I had drifted off a bit by that point.

I have no problem with the obvious historical distortions in the Henry VIII bit, except for the notion that ALL of Henry's proceeding wives were executed. Only #2 and #5 were. #3 (Jane Seymour) died after giving birth to Henry's only son. #6 (Catherine Parr) was alive and kicking when Henry died.

That's a very funny statement. The Simpsons as "an influential educational tool"?? Now I've heard everything. You're talking about an animated comedy, you realize. It's the inaccuracies that added quite a bit of comedic value to the episode.

The Simpsons is entertainment, pure and simple:) The innacuracies that we saw in this episode simply were done to reflect Marge telling the stories from memory, not from a book. I thought the episode as a whole was good:)

Neither was Clark, but it's just Simpsons characters portraying the historical figures. Things like that can be overlooked, yes?

Lisa made a point of noting that the last sketch was pretty innaccurate and based on the movie Amadeus, instead of the real life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Also, you have to take into consideration that it was Marge telling the story. Much like in the episode before this one, she gets the gist of things, but is sketchy on the details and therefore is prone to some innaccuracy.

I get the feeling that Lisa's last comment, about Marge basically re-telling the movie Amedeus was directed at the people who post here. Since we'd be the most likely to point these things out.

Aragon? Isn't that one of those spices that Marge never heard of?
