I might point out that the entire USA uses light switches the wrong way round (up for on, down for off). You'd have thought someone would have told them by now...

My family's house when i was a kid had some light switches that went that way (up=on), and some that went the other way as well. Then there was the stairs hallway light that was controlled by dual switches, meaning sometimes a switch would be up=on, sometimes down=on.
Yes, i was a schizo child. ;-D

Those are called three way switches (insert sex joke here).
And you can add as many four way switches as needed in between.

That's because here, electricity flows *up*.

That damned Coriolis effect - is nothing safe from it?

Nothing. In Australia all the light switches go in the opposite direction. Control volumes are different, too.

Whenever I try to kiss my girlfriends Australian style, they never say no.

Okay, now you're starting to make sense.
Now you had me running around in my flat and checking the light switches. Three are down=on, two are up=on. How very confusing.

I hope you don't get confused at the cellar door, and turn the light off instead of on, while you're carrying your pies or bowling balls downstairs. That could be painful.
Oh, that's okay. I have donated all my 75 Watt bulbs to that lizard breeding society next door, anyway.
This has to be a Simpsons reference. Pies and bowling balls. I can't remember the reference, but it sure sounds like Homer to me.
When you fall down the stairs with your pies and bowling balls, just make sure you don't crush the toaster time machine that you have in the basement. Or the old TV Guides with lots of Gomer Pyle references in them "PIEEEULLLL!!!, SHUHZAM!!!" (hey, there's that word, "pie", again). Or the hammer that Maggie used to hit you in the head with.

See Klaus' reply - that's a hint. Unless you're just being sarcastic :)

I prefer to think that Cletus is just ignorant.

Or maybe he's never had the pleasure of using a light switch before, he is extremely poor after all.
Exactly,
The light switch joke is to show how poor Cletus is, not how stupid. A bit like the Otto line when the Simpsons put their house up for sale "wow" windows! I don't think I could afford a place like this"
