Where does the radioactive ingot go?

In the opening sequence of The Simpsons Homer is working with a radioactive ingot, using a pair of tongs. When the end-of-day alarm rings he drops the ingot, which bounces into his radiation suit.

Later in the sequence, while he's driving home, he digs the ingot out of his shirt and tosses it out the window. It hits the curb with a *ding* and then DISAPPEARS just as Bart comes swooping into the shot.

This has been bugging me for years. Where does the ingot go? There's a sewer grating nearby, but it clearly does not go down the sewer, it just plain old vanishes.

Does anyone know if Groening has ever answered the question of where the ingot goes? Are there any plans for a future episode to go into detail about the fate of the vanishing ingot? Maybe the ingot could get spun off into its own series, if the plans for the Moe The Bartender series don't end up as planned?
