Isn't the a different Barney? AFAIK, there is no indication at all that the Bowl-O-Rama is owned by Barney Gumbel.

In "HOMR" his 'job' is revealed to be a medical guinea pig. His chest is full of ears, as a result.
He worked for his uncle at Barney's Bowl-O-Rama, but was fired years ago from the Simpsons' POV, when Homer was hired ("And Maggie Makes Three"). The connection between Barney's name and the name of the bowling alley has never been explained.

Like the similarly named Barney Rubble from the Flintstones, Barney Gumble has no clear-cut vocation. Although it was apparent that Barney Rubble had a regular job, they just never showed you where it was (with a couple exceptions, like where they showed Barney getting a job as a repo man or the one where he worked at the quarry.)
Barney Gumble, on the other hand, seems unemployed, and only goes into very temporary kinds of work (human testing, snow plowing, handing out fliers, film making, would-be astronaut, etc.)
Maybe he is like Kramer in Seinfeld.
He's been on continual strike from H&H Bagels?
