Episode re-evaluations

Anyone out there ever see an episode a couple years after you first saw it on FOX, and have a bit of a different opinion of it?

Well, I just saw "E-I-E-I-(annoyed grunt)" in syndication and didn't think it was all that bad. The first act (with the glove slapping) was funny, the second act, with the farm jokes, was fine. It bogged down with the Tomacco business, the angry animals, and the tacked on ending where Homer is shot (as amazingly an unfunny moment as I've ever seen on the show.)

Just for shits and giggles, I found my review of the episode on google. Here's what I wrote then:

I've found the same thing - it may be that we know what's coming the second time around and/or the added time it's had to sink in...while I try to keep that in mind when I write my (kind of flimsy) reviews (and some, like Benjamin Robinson, watch it twice that weekend), it is pretty interesting to read reviews (in capsules) of older, classic episodes...oh yeah

Not a syndication deal, but I was bored and not enjoying "Spelling as Fast as I Can" the first time it aired. Later I watched my tape of it, and liked it, think it to be one of the better eps in a while. In that case I think I was just in a bad mood because "Barting Over" wasn't very good (I didn't care about the 300th (302nd) angle either, it was just in the same sense that any bad episode is disapointing).

I didn't like your review when you wrote it originally, but now that I've reread it, I still don't like.

Just kidding. That happens to me too. I've actually come to tolerate "Kill the Alligator and Run".

I love the first act of that episode: that whole thing with Homer becoming obsessed with quizzes and then having a breakdown because a health quiz told him he's going to die soon. Once they get to Florida, though, I can't stand it--and I assume the FL stuff is the main point, given the title and all.

I generally find myself thinking, "Hey, this isn't too bad!" Then the reality sinks in and the quality of the episode drops. But I do admire individual jokes in even these bad episodes, particularly signs on the church, billboards, etc. I've never gone a complete 180 and liked an episode I previously hated.
