Some of the episodes I've downloaded from the 'net don't seem to play on the windows media player (or quicktime). I get a message that says, "error downloading codec", or something like that. Then, it'll play the sound but w/out any image.
This doesn't happen with most episodes I've downloaded, just around 1 out of 10.
Does anyone know how to solve this? Is there a "codec" that I need to download somewhere? And if so, where do I get it?

The Codec is nothing more than some code that allows WMP to understand how to display the compressed movie file. Since there are so many different encoding schemes it is near impossible to say for absolute sure what to use I would try to D/L divx http://www.divx.com. Elsewise contact the webmaster from where you got the file and ask what encoding scheme was used.

Just so everyone knows, the term CODEC is actually a shortened from of "Coder-Decoder",... and yeah, what you are saying is essentially right, except that it also involves recording the digital file as well as playback,... A piece of video has to be "Coded" from an anolog video stream to a digital file, and then "Decoded" using the same compression to play it back,...
So, Coder-decoder, or Codec.

Techinically, Codec stands for 'Compressor/Decompressor'. I recommend you get the Nimo Codec Pack, which contains TONS of codecs for both audio and video (all-in-one) and will make most things if they don't. http://www.btinternet.com/~nimosiro/

DivX worked for every bad file I had except one and it has been driving me crazy. KaZaa users only seem to have one version of "treehouse of horrors VIII" which has an audio codec error. Meanwhile I finally got hooked up to my dad's DSL connection and was able, for the first time, to download mpgs videos.=20 Well, I spent three days struggling with low broadband problems (lots of users downloading the same files) and a host of other technical difficulties (codec errors, KaZaa's STUPID inability to perform boolean searches, downloading several media players to correct file compatability and codec error problems)only to FINALLY have 12 out of 13 mpegs ready to burn onto CD and let my poor, sobbing ("I miss you, daddy!")5 year old have a LONG OVERDUE special treat to let her know how much I miss her and think about her... The missing episode, is "treehouse of horrors VIII." After spending nearly 12 hours and a sleepless night trying to find this episode, KaZaa users apparently have only TWO versions of this out there. One is a file with an AUDIO codec error that has refused every attempt I made to decompress or otherwize ferret out and salvage the corrupted data with winamp, windows media player, windows movie maker, and DivX, and the other is a 6 meg file with only the first segment (homega man). The corrupt file in question varies from 40 to around 45 megs and is in mpg or asf format. DivX (which usually clears up my codec problems) recognizes niether format, and all other media players led me on several painful wild goose chases long into the night. Worse of all... my daughters VERY favorite halloween Simpsons "Easy Bake Coven" is the last segment on this VERY episode!!!!! I spent HOURS hammering out all the errors in those other episodes and only have this ONE episode left giving me trouble. I have exhausted every idea that comes to me-- no mean feat, as I have been computer literate since 1980 and am extreamly good at trial and error, research, and problem solving. What I BEG someone to help me with is this: If you have a good copy of this episode on a format DivX recognizes (mp4, DivX, or avi)or a better, less compressed file that windows media player WILL play, please, please, please put it in your shared folder and let me download it. I am so angry about this. I lost a night's sleep and nearly a month overdue with this sentimental gesture. OR If you have any ideas on correcting the problem with these files, please, please, please help. I offer my thanks in advance-- it takes 8 hours to post on these boards because I can only afford to do it through google, so please don't misconstrue any long periods of silence.
