Just curious. How many Seinfeld fans here liked the final episode? I didn't like it. Not. One. Bit.
It was ludicrous. The writers took a leap into never never land. Did not work for me. I would have prefered a show that kept with the style of the others. In fact, the entire ninth season was my least favorite.

I couldn't disagree more. I thought the ninth season had some great episodes. Namely: The Junk Mail, The Merv Griffen Show, The Slicer, The Frogger, etc.
I could agree that the final episode was a little over the top, but I think it kind of had to be for what it represented. To me it felt like a mini-movie that sort of brought the whole series full circle. It's different, yes, but notably so. We got to re-visit all the characters that made an impact on the show and at the same time look back on all the episodes they represented.
Can you think of a good way to end that series in a single 'normal' episode?
I have to agree. In fact, my favorite episode of the entire series is The Voice, as I've stated before. I loved the trial in the final episode, although I think they could have set it up a bit better than that. I mean the whole premise of the four of them being sent to prison for a good Samaritan law violation is way out there, I thought they could have come up with something better than that. And no one ever thought to defend themselves by saying they were videotaping the crime so there would be proof to capture the perpetrator? I thought the rest of it was good except for that one aspect.

I remember watching the finale the night it aired and being really disappointed, but somehow it's grown on me over the years. The ending(s), with George & Jerry repeating dialogue from the first episode, and Jerry performing stand-up at the prison, are satisfying enough to me that they make up for whatever the rest of the episode is lacking.

While I concur with your episode list, the ninth season usually reminds me of all the stupid hospital room screaming in The Blood.
Perhaps a single "normal" episode would have been best.
For a show ostensibly about nothing, "no morals, no hugs," another day of minutiae on the West Side, and the characters' doomed fate to endless such days, would have been equally fitting as a finale.
I did enjoy the prison stand-up routine, however.
I agree. I think it would have been highly appropriate for the last scene to be the four of them strolling down a sidewalk debating proper toothpick technique or something like that.
Absolutely! I would have preferred a toothpick debate or some other banal discussion. Just a regular episode would have been so much better.

But there's no closure! I like the epic piece at the end, it serves as almost a moral that all those wrongs over the years finally came back to bite them. At least with the four of them in prison for a year, we're given the impression that we won't miss much, and it still does what the other episodes did in that Jerry and George's magnificent breakthrough went awry.
Maybe it's just me, but I think a single episode would've been a little anti-climactic. Then we think they're still going through all these zany events everyday and we just don't get to see them anymore.

IMHO, the finale suffered from the same problem that the Sopranos finale had. No matter how it ended, there would always be a sizable percentage of fans who thought it should have ended differently, and not be satisfied. I didn't really care for how the story ended, although I did enjoy how they brought all the old characters back. I didnt like some of the aspects that made no sense...a jail where men and women weren't segregated e.g.
It was bizarro jail. Nyuck nyuck! Now being a big Sopranos fan and a participant over at alt.tv.sopranos (as Big Al), I can tell you we all fought like cats & dogs over what the ending actually meant. At least Seinfeld didn't pull that one on us.

I agree it was too far from the Seinfeld comedy we've known. I too did not find it particularly funny and at first did not appreciate them going to prison one bit. I mean, in the past one of the four would end up sulking and whining "injustice" at this or that outcome but usually the others would be laughing in some sort of sick victory :oD
Anyway, it may help you interpret The Finale in a different angle of appreciation if you see "The Last Run", a series of interviews "inside-look-style" that features at the end of the episode list on the first DVD of the 9th season pack: the analysis of Jason Alexander (George) made perfect sense to me. Also try this book "Seinfeld and Philosophy" for a lot more on that.
