question about the episode "The Pothole"

There's a scene in this episode where Kramer runs out onto a busy highway. Did they use a stunt double or some other kind of effect for that? It's really looked like he was in danger.

The comments in the DVD said that Richards was almost killed in that scene because the drivers didn't know he was gonna run on the highway to pick up that piece of trash so it's the real deal. Thank god it all worked out.
