Ellen Degeneres

OK.  "These Friends of Mine" is a total ripoff of "Seinfeld," but I have to adm
it it makes me laugh every once in a great while.  However, last week's episode
 showed Ellen at a restaurant doing the sign for "check, please" to the waiter.
  Of course, she made a clever remark as to how silly it is to write a check in
 the air--which was already done by Jerry in "The Lip Reader" episode.
     And look at Ellen's cohorts.  The brunette is George's blind date from the
 1991 Emmy-winning episode "The Fix-Up."  And how about goatee-boy Arye Gross?
 Get this.  He's the opposite sex on a show about four friends--as is Julia Lou
is-Dreyfus.  Both Julia and Arye had roles in "Soul Man."  What a hoot!
     I also saw the second episode of "These Friends of Mine," and it's guest s
tar was the actor who played the mayor's aide that nobody liked in the "Seinfel
d" episode "The Non-Fat Yougurt."
     Finally, is "These Friends of Mine" a stupid title or what?  At least call
 it "Ellen"!

I totally agree... "These Friends of Mine" is a total "Seinfeld" rip-off. I've only seen a couple episodes. They were sort of funny, but I saw the show stealing jokes from EVERYTHING. In one episode (I think it was the pilot), Degeneres did a little Candice Bergen bit, singing in to the telephone ("Buttercup"). I was kind of disappointed, but I have to admit that the show duplicates "Seinfeld" pretty well.

Granted. But given time, I'm sure it will find its own persona.

Oddly enough, the show has been picked-up for next season.... And they've changed the name to "Ellen"!

How about this one: Adam (Arye) and Ellen supposedly dated before and decided to be platonic friends instead. Is it really that hard to think up a new situation?

I just shook my head when she started doing the check wave. Although in Jerry's case, he just wanted to clarify that that was how you signed for the check in sign language, the rip-off was obvious. I'm going to continue giving this show a chance, but if nothing happens within, say, the next month, then see ya later. The characters aren't distinct from one another. I don't even know their names or care to remember.

Do you also notice that These Friends of Mine uses similar sounding musical riffs when it returns from a commercial? Hehe... goatee-boy. I kept on trying to place him for the first couple episodes. Then I finally got it... and then I also realized at the same time that Julia was also in that movie. Sad, but kinda funny. They're trying to duplicate Seinfeld but they just aren't coming close to the bulls-eye, or even the entire target for that matter.

Duplicates Seinfeld pretty well? It's not even close... the three supporting characters have not impressed me at all. The guy from Soul Man is on occasion somewhat humorous, but the other two just dwindle in the background, adding virtually nothing to the show.
