Because it's funny. This is the second time someone has posted that they don't understand the joke. Frankly, I don't understand what is so esoteric about it. We all know somebody who has the same name as a celebrity. I know a Steve Martin, for example, who looks nothing like the famous Steve Martin. It is a common humorous device to recontextualize the familiar. This is what Jerry Seinfeld's humor is based on.

I think the confusion comes from it *not* being esoteric, or particularly funny. I suspect the reaction is something like, "Uh, is that supposed to be amusing, or is there some deeper meaning that I'm just not getting?"

In my opinion, the whole "same name as a celebrity, different appearance" joke was handled so much better with the Michael Bolton character in "Office Space".

That movie has become my favorite movie of the 90's if not all time. And that's pretty good for a comedy!

I think what's different about the Micheal Bolton character, though, is they repeatedly make the question: "Is that your real name?" and in Seinfeld they pay no attention to it. Only that she has to say repeatedly "My name is Rebecca De Mornay." I don't see how that's funny either.

Agreed. And that's funny mainly because of Michael's pained look whenever he's asked about his name. Or even better, when the two consultants (who are about to decide whether or not to fire him) are gushing over Michael Bolton the singer, and Michael has to sit there with a forced smile. Great stuff!
