Thread discusses a real news story about a vibrator causing airport security issues, with off-topic digressions about Fight Club and semantic distinctions between adult toys.
An x-ray examination of the buzzing box which shut down Logan International Airport today revealed the buzzing came from a battery operated vibrator. It had somehow become activated while going through new safety inspections.
An FBI profiler speculated that the perp was most likely a single woman.. acting alone.
Hey, that reminds me of the airport scene in Fight Club:
[NARRATOR voice-over: Airlines have this policy about vibrating luggage.]
NARRATOR : Was it... was it ticking? AIRPORT SECURITY OFFICER: Actually, throwers don't worry about ticking 'cuz modern bombs don't tick. NARRATOR : Sorry, "throwers"? AIRPORT SECURITY OFFICER: Baggage handlers. But when a suitcase vibrates, then the throwers gotta call the police. NARRATOR : My suitcase was vibrating? AIRPORT SECURITY OFFICER: Nine times out of ten, it's an electric razor. But every once in a while... [looks around] ...it's a dildo. 'Course, it's company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a dildo. We have to use the indefinite article "a dildo", never "YOUR dildo". NARRATOR : I... I don't own... AIRPORT SECURITY OFFICER: [interrupts with a wave and head shake]
Agreed--I'd use the terms in the same way you do, but then again I didn't write the book/screenplay. I think that's probably the only advantage I'd have over Chuck Palahniuk: "John's movie is the most boring, unoriginal tripe ever written. But the man *does* know his dildos from his vibrators!" :-)
Then again, perhaps vibrators are just a subset of dildos? Can we get a Venn diagram here?

If a dildo is a device that resembles human male genitalia, then a vibrating device that resembles human male genitalia could be referred to as both a dildo and a vibrator. A vibrating device that looks like something else would be just a vibrator, and a device that looks like a penis but doesn't vibrate would be just a dildo.
If you've caught the DVD version of the flick, the extras reveals that the security dick offers a joke to somehow ease the pain "Jack" is feeling. Unfortunately (fortunately for those who find it crass), it ended up on the floor. It was something along the lines: [ASO] Know what the industry term for a stewardess is? [Jack] (Shakes head) [ASO] Air mattress.
I guess is didn't really add anything to the story at that point, and I'm guessing Finch saw it that way as well, though I'm not too sure it was he that decided the scene be edited. If you liked the movie and haven't had the opportunity to catch the behind-the-scenes bits, I definitely recommend looking into it. They go into deeeep detail about the special effects and concepts. One of the "easter eggs" is a catalog set up to showcase the "Furni" products (ala the scene where Jack describes his home furnishings). See www.dvdeastereggs.com for more details.
