I'm sure that the live audience's reaction was often "sweetened" in post-production. In other words, if the producers thought a line deserved a bigger laugh than the studio audience gave it, they added canned laughter to the finished product. Or if, because of some technical blunder, a great punch-line has to be repeated, the studio audience certainly wouldn't react to the third or fourth take as well as they did the first time they heard it. Canned laughter is later added to approximate the initial reaction.
Another theory would be that the studio audience has some information that the home viewer isn't privy to. For example, if an actor blows his line five or six times before getting it right, the audience could be laughing at the off-screen reaction of other actors, thereby giving a joke a bigger laugh than it deserves.
