The one hour "special" episode that aired on Thursday, May2nd clearly demonstrated how low the show has sunk in terms of quality of script.
The show that used to gloriously focus on "nothing', has now become a typical sitcom with overly contrived situations and plot developments to move the episode along.
Specifically:
1) Would the detail-oriented Jerry or the neurotic Elaine we used to know and love consider for a minute leaving a set of $20,000 golf clubs sitting in the back seat of car. Not bloody likely.
2) A subplot of delivering empty soda cans to Michigan in a mail truck to collect the deposit refund? What is this, Sgt. Bilko?
3) By "coincidence", the mailtruck just happens to end up behind Jerry's stolen car almost 1,000 miles from home. Uh-huh.
4) For that matter, a mechanic so obsessed with Jerry's car that he steals it. Oh sure, I can relate to that -- its happened to at least three of MY friends.
5) George is dragged from his job to a mental institution by men in white coats. I'm sure it occurs all the time -- in old Three Stooges epidsodes.
The beauty of "Seinfeld" was that it focused on slightly hyperbolized life scenarios that you could relate to and that might have in some manner actually happened to you or your friends. It was this ability to relate to the characters and their predicaments that made the show so brilliant. Its what makes the reruns so superior to most of this season's episodes.
I would rather see the show end now, than be subject to further deterioration in script quality next season. A "Fresh Prince of Manhattan" we don't need.
