Jason Alexander

Can anybody tell my why, at the beginning credits, it always reads, "And Jason Alexander". Why tag him on at the end?

It reads "And Jason Alexander as George" because he's the last one to be listed. They usually give the character's name in addition to the actor's name in the last name of the opening credits. It's a way of saying "And last but not least." :-)

Oddly enough, it is the next best thing to first billing, which only Jerry could get for this program. Put him last, along with the name of his character (which none of the other main stars got) and you've set him apart from the rest. Remember that Alexander was the most estab- lished and highly regarded actor among the co-stars when the series was conceived. He had already won a Tony as best lead actor in a Broadway musical (in 1987)...and had a number of other prominent movie and film credits as well. He'd just finished a prominent supporting role in the film "Pretty Woman" when the Seinfeld pilot was done. The others, while they had some strong credits, hadn't hit that level yet. So Alexander asked for, and got, special individual billing, and that was the way it was done.

Usually, the "and/as" is reserved for actors with the largest or most successful body of work. In Jason Alexander's case, he was a Tony award-winning singer/dancer/actor, and a feature film actor (eg Pretty Woman) BEFORE Seinfeld. He was arguably the only actor of the four that anyone had ever heard of when the show was in its beginnings. Needless to say, the others "caught up" in terms of fame.

Probably because he already had a lot of credit as an actor. Jerry, even though he was the star, had no credit.
