Seinfeld and Cars

Sometimes Jerry has a car; other times he wanders around in public transportations... what's the deal?

I think it's called life in New York City. Hassel of parking, giving up a good space, most of his haunts are close enough to walk to. Therefore Jerry has a car when he has to go far or use public trans or cabs (split the fare and it's areal bargin.) when he goes semi-local. Just my theory.
