i just noticed this the other day but. how come the cereal lover jerry claimed to elaine that he was lactose intolerent? is this a writer slip up?

There are varying degrees of lactose intollerance. Maybe milk just makes Jerry fart a lot. Besides, he can drink Lactaid.

Lots of people eat it "dry"...but, come to think of it, I remember aleast a few times where Jerry has milk in his fridge, so he must have been kidding (as usual)... --JLR

Most memorable time that Jerry had milk in his fridge was when Kramer drank the spoiled milk and vomited on Susan!

True, but you think someone who eats as much cereal as Jerry (if he eats it with milk) would always have a fresh jug of milk in the fridge, or he wouldn't have any at all if he had used it all, but I don't think he would buy milk, and then never drink any just to let it spoil in the fridge. Unless, of course, he bought it, and then suddenly had to go out of town for a "routine". Man, I think we're really reading too much into this. ;-)

I remember one episode where George asks Jerry if he'd like to grab a bite to eat, and Jerry replies, "Nah, I just had a big bowl of Kix." I'm assuming there was also milk in the bowl, so is was probably a joke.

Also, milk was part of the plot of an early Susan episode. Remember when George first brought Susan to Jerry's apartment? Kramer had just drank some milk from Jerry's fridge, and Jerry asked, "Hey, what's the expiration date on that?" The milk turned out to be spoiled, and Kramer THREW UP on Susan.

BTW, great article on Jerry in next week's TV Guide in Canada. Turns out there's a chance they might go for two more seasons. They also list the greatest all-time episodes (can't remember them all, but I know "The Pick", "The Parking Garage", "The Soup Nazi" and "The Rye" are in there, and "The Contest" is #1).

Actually, I've only seen him eat straight out of the box, so maybe he never eats it with milk.

He did eat it with milk in the very first episode (the one with Laura wanting to stay at his apartment and then it turns out she is engaged). At least I think it was cereal he was eating.

Maybe he is only midly lactose intolerant or maybe he takes pills to combat it or something.

No, I remember the lats episode of the season where he was in the restaurant with his new "perfect girlfriend" eating Cheerios (out of a bowl like normal). What episode did he say he was lactose intolerant? Also, do you remember the show with George's "healer" who said Jerry was getting too much dairy, and Jerry seemed concerned maybe b/c he knows he drinks too much milk w/ his cereal? Or maybe he questioned the "healer" b/c he doesn't drink that much milk? Any ideas?

For what it's worth, I think the lactose intolerance was discussed in the episode where Jerry was dating the woman who liked the Dockers commercials. He said something to her like, "I've never, ever seen an episode of 'I Love Lucy.' And I'm lactose intolerant...I have no patience for lactose..."

It seemed to me that he was putting her by making the statement that he was lactose intolerant, since it followed the line about never having seen an episode of "I Love Lucy." It's hard to imagine that anyone his age who grew up with a TV never saw an episode of "I Love Lucy," especially a comedian!

Maybe he pours orange juice on his breakfast flakes. There are also products such as Lact-Aid that allow lactose intolerant people to drink milk.

Speaking of milk and breakfast cereals... Has anyone else notices that the boxes of cereal in Jerry's cupboards never seem to change position very frequently? Mine do, and I eat cereal even less than Jerry does... what's that all about?

(I love noticing small stuff like that! It gives me something to do with my life!! :-)

with the joke that follows his statement of being lactose intolerant, one can only assume that he was meant, "he had no tolerance for lactose." he disliked it. This is the only explanation.

2 Points about Seinfeld and cereal:

1) On Entertainment Tonight, Jerry was making fun of John Tesh because John liked to eat his cereal with water. Jerry remarked that cereal needed to be eaten with a denser liquid (i.e. milk) than water. At least that shows what Jerry's preference is, though that may not necessarily carry over to the TV shows' Jerry.

Also, I have once mistakenly added water to my cereal (it was early, and both the milk and water were in similair gallon containers). I thought it was horrible.

2) On either ET or Extra, there was a segment about Seinfeld, and I believe they mentioned that one of the people on the set was in charge of the cereal cabinet. They showed how she made sure the boxes were in order (alphabetical I think), as well as there being cereal in there.

(The person was also in charge of other features of the set as well).

I saw an Oprah a few weeks ago where they were talking about people who have really cool jobs. They showed this lady whose job was to alphabatize the cereal boxes in Jerry's kitchen and make sure there was enough food in the fridge for each taping. What an easy job!

Did you ever notice that Jerry has a Macintosh computer but displayed on the desk is a copy of Microsoft Windows.

FYI, there's milk you can buy for lactose intolerant people. Those people, like my parents, who just won't stand for lactose.

It wasn't Elaine he said that he was lactose intolerant to; it was a
woman he was dating.  And he said it as a joke, following it up with
something like "I'm very intolerant of lactose, I have no patience for
it at all."  He was just fooling.
