answering phone from solicitors

I love Seinfeld, but I didn't find that scene too funny because it's very unrealistic. No telemarketer would ever come right out and ask a yes or no question like that. It would be too easy to say no and then hang up. Instead, they yap for 2 minutes and then say something like "if I can just verify your address now Mr. Seinfeld, we'll sign you right up".

To Whom It May Concern: Long before I saw that episode, I was once called by a telemarketer, and had the following conversation:

ME: Hello.

TELEMARKETER: Hello. May I speak to Eric Perlin, please.

ME: Speaking.

TELEMARKETER: Good afternoon, Mister Perlin. How are you today?

ME: I'm fine. Thanks.

(I hung up.)

The Seinfeld scene was as realistic as real life. But that doesn't say much for real life!
