I guess a lot of that stuff they make in Italy isn't pizza. I think tomato sauce only fits the American definition of pizza. I think dough is the key, with some ingredients piled on, and almost always cheese. The problem is when you get these pizzas with the extra layer of dough on top (not a calzone, but like an apple pie).

What about frozen pizza?  I wonder what they would call it if they didn't
call it pizza.  "Totino's frozen dough with stuff on top."  Interesting.
