Mistake in Seinfeld

I don't think this one's in the FAQ - it's kind of ungainly but I did visibly wince when I saw this episode for the first time last night:

At the end of The Couch George is trying to bluff having read Breakfast at Tiffany's at a book club even though he's only seen the video. The ending of the film has Audrey Hepburn reconciling with George Peppard but this doesn't happen in the book so George looks like an idiot saying "after all she did get together with George Peppard... I mean Fred".

So far so good. But to correct George, Heather his girlfriend, witheringly pronounces "George, Fred is gay" and goes uncontradicted by the other book club members.

Thing is Fred *isn't* gay and he isn't George Peppard. Anyone who *has* read the book or indeed paid close attention to the film would know that he's actually Holly's - often mentioned but never met - brother.

I know you are probably upset because you wasted a lot of time reading the book, but the joke was that none of the other people read the book either.

Thanks but you're wrong, and not only about the fact that I need a Seinfeld reference to persuade me to check out a classic of 20th century literature.

All the drama of the scene points to George having been shown up as an embarrassed idiot. (Quite a common Seinfeld scenario in fact.) Not that anyone else was. And if you can point out the blatant evidence of George Peppard's homosexuality that they might have picked from the *film* I'd be interested in hearing it. If they noticed that they would certainly have noticed the name mistake.

Moreover the amount of people who picked up Heather's "deliberate" mistake and responded to my post tends to underline the point. I imagine most posters here don't feel intellectually insecure enough to have to pretend that they spotted a flaw in a (relatively) obscure literary reference in a sit-com episode. :-)
