Is Elaine Jewish?

OK in the rabi episode she does tell the rabi that she isn't of his faith. But there is some contrary evidence from an a earlier episode. In the subway episode Elaine can't make the lesbian wedding because the subway train stalled. When they were once again at the coffe shop Jerry said." So what you can always make the bris."

Elaine did the sign of the cross that Christians do on the episode where Jerry fumigates his apartment because of the fleas from Newman. (The mackinac peach episode)

Here's more evidence against that theory... In "The Airport", Jerry is flying first class and Elaine is stuck in coach. Elaine gets out of her seat while dinner is being served and discovers on her return that her dinner was given away and they only have a kosher plate remaining. Elaine exclaims that she doesn't want it and doesn't even know what "kosher" is.

That doesn't prove anything. If she lives in New York chances are she knows enough Jews to know what a bris is. It didn't say she was *performing* the bris, after all.

I think that the times she has worn a cross should be sufficient to convince anyone that she is not Jewish.

She knows what a bris is. After all, she was in charge of booking the Moile (Moyle?) in 'The Bris' episode.

As far as Jerry's comments about the lesbian couple goes, *it's a joke*! If a bris is the circumcision of a male infant, exactly when will this lesbian couple be throwing a bris?

This is because Jerry is Jewish. We know he is Jewish because he mugged an old lady for a loaf of rye and he bought his father a cadillac instead of a mercedes.

So do I. I was watching a rerun in syndication last night and I thought I saw a Mazzozah on Elaine's door of her apartment. I don't think it matters one way or another what anyone's religion is on the show, I think it's just interesting to let your imagination take over. Agreed. I think it has nothing to do with that, at least for most of the people posting in this newsgroup. The reason it facinates me (and I fall into the "of course George is Jewish camp") is because the humor on Seinfeld is so obviously classic New York Jewish humor, and it bothers me just a little that they seem to be going out of their way to obscure the issues of ethnicity. Anti-semite? Quite the contrary. I just think there isn't any reason the show shouldn't step right up and say, here we are, a mostly Jewish cast, Jewish writers, carrying on a proud tradition of humor, and we make no apologies for it. ...the during the episode in which Newman infested Jerry's apartment with fleas, after the place had been fumigated, Elaine made the sign-o'-the-cross (a very unJewish gesture) as she was collecting breath before entering to try to locate the manuscript she was supposed to proofread.

On a recent re-run episode there was a peice of evidence that seems to answer the question once & for all. The episode in question is where Jerry's apartment is being fumigated & Elaine runs in to recover a manuscript she left there. Before making the mad dash she crosses herself. This would indicate Elaine being of the Chriestian faith.

Additionally, I seem to remember the episode when Elaine got stuck in coach and Jerry lived it up in 1st class that Elaine was compelled to eat the kosher meal against her will. She said something to the effect of "Kosher?! I don't even know what that is!" Another passenger replied with the answer of " I think its when they can't eat the pork with the dairy together" . Julia-Louis Dreyfus, is however, Jewish. The name Benes to me seems to be of Czechoslavakian origin.. (I believe that there was a Czech premier after WW2 named Benes). You can't of course, rely on surnames as an indiacator of course. My Hungarian middle name which comes from my Mom's maiden name is Denes, almost like Benes, and I am very Jewish...

In episode that aired in New York tonite, Elaine says that she sent Christmas cards to her priest and to a nun. Obviously shows she is Catholic. This is the episode where Kramer takes picture of Elaine and her nipple shows in the card. Also episode where kramer models underwear for Calvin Klein.
